Can't you drown yourself if you drink TOO much water?
I've heard that. 3 liters is WAY TOO MUCH in my opinion.
I found an article. Check it out.

Water is very good for you, so there are tons of pros. Most importantly, it doesn't have any calories, fat, cholesterol, sugars, or any other thing that would negatively affect your health or diet.
There are two cons- you will have to pee a lot, but that's not really so bad. The other con is that you should make sure the water you drink is clean. So, don't drinking rain water or anything like that. Tap water is fine. Don't drink distilled water or anything like that, either.
Anyway, the pros outweigh the cons so much that you should keep doing what you're doing.

There is one con of drinking too much water...there's a condition called hyponatremia that is basically where you drink so much water that you have totally depleted sodium stores in your body and the water starts to drown your brain cells first. It's a very dangerous condition and the majority of people who are at risk for this are marathon runners, but if you drink too much and don't take in enough sodium you can put yourself at risk. I go by drinking half of my body weight in ounces of water a day and around 2500mg of sodium a day.

Pro = unless you drink too much it can't hurt you.
Con = If you do drink too much it will kill you.
That's right too much water all at once can kill you but 3L spread out throughout the day is fine. You don't need that much though.

If you drink too much water ( and were talking way too much) it can lead to a decrease of sodium in the body. This is a major problem because sodium does so much physiologically.

the (only?) official reason for it was improving people's dental health - but I think research has shown that brushing your teeth with fluoridated toothpaste is a lot more effective than drinking the stuff, or eating fluorid pills. you could post it in health-dental

Too much can kill you. Not enough can kill you. Drink what you need. Drink when thirsty. If urine is clear, you are drinking enough. If colored (except when fasting, taking vitamins etc.) you may be low on water. See anti-water on this site.
