But seriously, they are two different things. The rectum is the area inside, while the anus is the exterior part of the opening.
Definition of anus from Dictionary.com:
the opening at the lower end of the alimentary canal, through which the solid refuse of digestion is excreted.
Definition of rectum from Dictionary.com:
the comparatively straight, terminal section of the intestine, ending in the anus.
