After I went to work yesterday my beagle ate a hole right through my bedroom door to get into the room. He is 1 yr 6 mos old and has not been neutered and otherwise does not chew furniture. What do you think about that?

I think you just found out that you own a BEAGLE. Beagles are highly social dogs that HATE to be alone. They will chew, dig and bark endlessly. Get a super-sturdy dog crate or get him a companion.

It sounds to me that he is bored or having separation anxiety.

I would suggest crate training him so that your property is safe and so is he. He could have very easily checked an alarm clock wire or something we really don't think about. Crates provide the dog with a safe space that they consider their own bedroom, their safe spot.

There are also toys available that have spaces in them for you to hide treats in.... which if you buy a bunch of them... should keep him occupied while you are at work.

Beagles are high energy dogs that need lots of exercise. Make sure before you leave him.... you give him a big workout. This way his energy will have been burnt off and he will sleep for a good bit of the time you are gone.

Hope I was of help to you. Good Luck!Years of owning a show kennel and doing rescue.

I think your Beagle is a LOT like mine! LOL

Mine is 4 yrs. old and gets into absolutely EVERYTHING!!!!! I have to watch her like a little two year old, keep everything picked up and so forth.

I'd recommend caging yours when you're gone. That's what I do. Her cage is plenty big and she doesn't mind it. It's not cruel if you are using it as a "safe-haven" only. Do not use it for punishment! It's a habit (she's used to it!)

You'll want to use treats to reward yours upon entering the cage. Get a cage big enough for him/her to walk around in a complete circle and be able to stand up, too. Put his/her toys and special blankie in there with it, so he/she will feel more comfortable.

If yours doesn't have a special blankie, go get him/her one, just for kennel use! That makes it even more special.

If you wanna talk more, please e-mail me!

beagles are known as a power chewer type of breed. which means the only way to satisfy their chewing urges is to chew on something hard you may try getting him a kong ball or another sturdy chew toy from a pet store. this may stop the door thing.

sounds like he may be bored. either make sure he has lots of toys or if he doesn't start behaving you may need to leave him in a crate while you are away. Many dogs do very well being crate trained while owners are away

Dude. Dogs can smell a female dog in heat for up to 2 miles away. Frustration to get out to meet her could definatley cause this behavior. I have treated dogs who have jumped through plate glass windows in attempts to get outdoors

I think he was very interested in something in your room and found a way to get it.
