What's the point in just answering "go to the doctor" or "go get help". I mean it's not BAD that it's said. However some people would like other advice then doctors and meds. I think having people share similar experiences can help a lot.
Also it's annoying when people suggest things like it's easy to do. Like having anxiety, well just get out there and do it. If it were that easy they wouldn't be sitting at a computer asking the question right? Braving up and doing something could make it worse, I know I've been there. Going to the doctor, taking meds, and going to a therapist doesn't cure you. Mental illness is something a lot of people need time to work through.

I'm not saying nobody should suggest going to the doctor or therapist, it can help but it's not a cure all. I just think some questions are geared toward wanting to hear peoples experiences and small tips to ease themselves when they already are on meds and in therapy. There are lots of mental health message boards on the net that are like support groups for people and for some this section of ask is no different.

I read this and lost track of your question, I agree with you, more and more people are blaming everything on some sort of "mental" and think a pill will cure it, I am not saying "doctors and pills" don't help, but that is all they do. People just don't have the time, don't want to, or don't really know what else to say, and yes it is very annoying.

You are so right when you say "taking meds and going to a therapist doesn't cure you.." Medication and a therapist are only some of the things that can be done for a person that has a mental illness. The majority of the work must come from the person that has the illness. If no effort is put into managing the illness then the illness will not be managed. It takes changes in the way you think, changes or increases in coping skills, and management of impulses. It takes having a plan in place for the management of certain problematic symptoms. A therapist usually helps with that.
Of course mental illness is something a person has to work through but that person should be proactive rather than reactive.
Proactive being that yu are speaking withsomeone on a regular basis to help you work through your stuff and reactive being not getting help until after you have decompensted and been hospitalized
When you post a question about something as serious as a mental illness and you are listing symptoms and stating what sounds; alarming then people are going to give you what they consider to be the best answer they can...which is seek out a doctor or go and get help.
What do you mean "braving up and doing something could make it worse"? Does this mean that there are some things that you've tried that didn't work? Maybe you need to put some other things in place, first, before you "brave it up"?
As far as people thinking that making changes is easy..I suspect that you are mistaken. Anyone who has ever had to change anything; be it a job, home, place to live, etc didn't find it to be so easy. That is YOUR perception and of course your reality.
I will leave you with this Anything worth having is worth the struggle to obtain it. If having a sound mental health is important to you...you will do whatever you need to do to get it. It's real easy to make excuses and do nothing it hard to look at ourself honestly and make changes.

You are right, mental illnesses do take time and work but some of that work comes from the therapist. When you are asking for help like for depression or something along those lines, going to the doctor is the best solution even if it is just a small issue. It might make it worse but it may also make it better. Why sit around thinking of the negative when you've really got nothing to lose. Better go now rather than later when it is a huge issue. Besides....some of us are doctors here and when asked questions like that we tell them what we believe is right. It's kinda in our training. And it is better to get advice from someone who knows what they're talking about rather someone on the internet who doesn't.

You're right. Mental illness is something people need time to work through. Maybe when someone suggests that you go to a doctor or get help, they are suggesting that you do go to someone who can take the time to help you work things through. Here, we can offer support and encouragement, but have no way to take the time to really hear all there is to a situation, and offer the time to give real help.
I know that some of the answers you can get here seem sarcastic and insensitive, but some of us know from experience that finding someone who can give your feelings and problems the time they need is the best advice we can offer.

Well I guess you answered your own question. You're right, it takes time. And everyone's experiences are different.
I can share what has worked for me, but I'm always trying new things. The best thing I have done recently is to avoid alcohol. I think a lot of people come in here with "depression," or whatever, but they are drinking and using drugs. Those people won't be helped by ANYTHING until they quit completely. O and yes, that INCLUDES marijuana, which is not "harmless."

I think noone understands mental illness unless they have it. People with mental illness are rarely validated. It is a shame the stigma placed on mental illness. I wish I could "get over it." I sure would have a lot more time, patience, and money.

If you want to see a doctor or med its your choice. People are just going to make suggestion. Only you can decide what you want to do. You can either decide to ask a friend or handle it by yourself.

Well what is it? It could be SAD (seasonal affective disorder) if medication and therapy or the doctor don't help. In that case, this special lampy thingy is needed.

I tried evrything also the last 8-10 years nothing has worked. & you typed this question the this same day I got my Celexa refilled . ( 5 month refill ) FOR ANXIETY ~~~~!!! I try to talk my self out of anxiety. nothing works. Medicine does.
