i recently found a purse with quite a bit of money inside, yet no contact information at all. I put up signs around the neighborhood, but was just wondering how long I should wait until giving up?

Put an ad in the paper lost and found, and bring it to the police station. Someone is looking for it. When they call, tell them where the purse is.

It's a little late now, but what you should have done was take it to the police station. After six months, if it isn't claimed, it is returned to you and the money is yours to keep.
You might want to check with the legal department at city hall, but as far as I know, posting signs in the neighborhood doesn't cut it.
Until you clarify the situation, and find out exactly what the rules in your community are regarding lost and found property, I wouldn't spend any of that money...

You should atleast waite 90 days. If someone comes 2 claim it first see if they know whats on the purse. You can never be to sure crazy people are going around stealing these types of things.

Why did you decide to post signs? You could be setting yourself up for some dangerous encounters. You may want to consider giving the money to the police. In most cases, if the money goes unclaimed after 90 days or so, the person who found the money/purse keeps it.

Please think about it. You may not want to have that much money in your home and have strangers come to your place to claim it.

Please be careful.

what was inside the purse? any type of ID? any paperwork? maybe you should take it to the police where they can fingerprint it and find out who it belongs to. Or, maybe there was a holdup in the area, or an accident, or a missing person, and they are looking for that purse. Give it to the police, money and all.

Take the purse to the Police department.

Sure they might actually find the owner but that's the good Samaritan in you. The Police have established times and if no one is the rightful owner, you will get the money LEGALLY...

You can run a classified ad under Lost and Found column. I'm assuming you're alerting people they must identify the purse before you hand it over.

I think it's up to you how long you wait.

Legally you should turn it in to the Police Department and fill out paperwork. After it has remained unclaimed for a certain amount of time it will be given back to you.

30 days becomes a finders keepers.

PS: Make sure you take down all the signs after 30 days.
