I have Windows XP SP2. I have tried downloading the free basic Limewire software. After it is downloaded, I can't get the icon to open. I've restarted my computer after installation and have tried installation several times. What's going wrong? If you can, walk me through the correct installation process, thank you.

Most likely your problem is with security and not the program itself. If you have Norton, any other internet/virus protection, or a firewall any of those might be blocking Lime wire because it uses the internet. I remember when I got my new computer, it has Norton Internet Security, that when I tried to use Limewire, it wouldn't work because the firewall blocked its access to the internet. This can be easily resolved by changing the auto settings your firewall made for the program. All you have to do is allow the program to access the internet. (It will probably say it is trying to access a DNS port or something but allow it anyway)
Hope this works. ;)

I have and use limewire. Before you use it, be warned, I have had to reformat and reinstall everything on my computer over it. almost all songs you get have spy-ware from there. My advice is to use a separate HD or other memory source to store the songs, or use a firewall that lets you block everything on request ((zone alert)

I think you does not completely download the limewire installation.
Try to download again.
