Mating Sequence of HotDogs

The mating ritual of HotDogs occurs in the wild on very cold nights and is rarely seen by researchers. Usual required temperatures are 32 degrees F and below. The male HotDog circles the female around, and around again in dizzying circles to coat her with a thin oil that lubricates her skin.

Finally, after sufficient circling around and coating with oil from the male, the female releases her offspring in fairly large batches, rather than all at once. The offspring, known in Dogery as "Doglets" are born in groups of ten or twelve and encased in a filmy wrapper to protect them from germs until they reach the mature adult HotDog stage of life. Mature HotDogs are usually about five to six inches long and roughly three quarters of an inch in diameter. The filmy sack that they are born in stretches and stretches as the HotDogs grow to full size, finally taking on an unusual rectangular looking shape. Nutrition for growth of the Doglets is absorbed by the infants through the filmy sack over a period of many months. A mature female HotDog can lay over 24 sacks of Doglets on that one night of frantic, circling reproduction. Over the years this busy, busy activity has come to be known as 'Labor.' The day that labor occurs is then correctly called "Labor Day."

Dogery Harvesters collect these sacks of grown Doglets and pack them in cardboard cases for shipment to far off markets where they are sold as food for human beings. Intermediate frozen warehousing of the cases of shipped HotDogs occurs somewhere along the way in this grand process. This storage process is necessary to keep an even flow of HotDogs moving to the various markets nationwide and fill up the holes on their supermarket shelves. That is why the intermediate storage people are called "Hole Salers."

In any event, I have found that the most interesting thing about HotDog Mating is the fact that the offspring are so uniquely identical as in multituplets, or dozenlets. Ball Field HotDogs are not immediately distinguishable from the Home Fried variety, and their status in life seems not to be influenced by their education. Apparently their fate is determined entirely by the Hole Salers when they make the various decisions about shipping the HotDogs onward to their final destinations.

Sexing of a HotDog is an arduous task for those of you who may be so inclined. The males, when held carefully in the light will tend to drip tiny droplets of oil from their skin. The females will remain entirely dry, and do not have that slight grin at the pinched end like the males have.

Very carefully! They have to successfully sneak up on a bun and then penetrate it in order to mate. You will know they have mated when you spy a gooey substance, such as ketchup or mustard on them.
