You need to help yourself. Let the private sector do what it does best - build homes, make money etc. The government is not a realestate development company. Why on earth would anyone think they can rebuild a city? Right?? This is why they are not doing a good job. That is not their job. Its like asking a store clerk to help you with finacial advice - it is an absurd request.

Hi Cricket, I too am from New Orleans, and even before Katrina hit people bashed Louisiana and New Orleans. Have you noticed that since Katrina, all of a sudden people are saying, how stupid it is to build a city BELOW sea level? When everybody was going for Mardi Gras and getting tore up down there they thought it was the greatest thing since Tabasco sauce. Unless you are from there, these big mouths talking about how everything should be done differently, they don't understand. Not only did people loose everything, AND THE GOVT.DOESN'T CARE, but we've lost all the history we were brought up with. Just consider the people that bash our great city, are just ignorant fools, and what goes around comes around. My prayers are with you sweetheart. And we will get through this together. And for everyone else out there that says people should move to N.C. or somewhere else, allot of us our ancestor's go back hundreds of years from there. It's not only a state and a city, it's in our very veins, and no place else can compare. I never hear people say, everyone in Calif. deserves to loose everything, because there's earthquakes. It just seems to be us from the south. Instead of people all coming together, there will always be those that want to put people down. WE are stronger than Katrina,we will make it, against all odds.

I agree with Mr. Danger. I have nothing against New Orleans or its people, it's rebuilding the city that is the problem.

It is not feasible for the City to be rebuilt in the same location due the elevation and location. The Corp of Engineers have said that the levees will take a few years to function against a hurricane.

Now if the Corp of Engineers was at fault for the levees breaking due to negligence, then they should be responsible to reimburse people for their lost. I also think the petro/chem industry should take more responsibility for ruining the wetlands. However, the State needs the petro/chem industry's income and has exonerated the industry.

I don't know if LA is completely populated or has areas open like the Western states. If they have land available, I don't understand why they just don't relocate the City.

Nobody is bashing New Orleans or the people who live[d] in it. i happen to love the city and have spent many happy and debaucherous hours exploring it.
There is however a feeling among many people -myself included -that re-building New Orleans on its' present site is a waste of taxpayers money. The reason is that there is a good possibility that if another storm the size of Katrina hits New Orleans all that money will have been spent for naught. I think that it would be far better to build a new city in a new and much safer location.
The fact of the matter is that whatever New Orleans was before Katrina ,belongs to the past. A re-built city will be New Orleans in name only. So you may as well rebuild it in a safe place.

I wish people would stop bashing our city, too. Y'all might be tired of hearing about Katrina, but we're tired of living it. It's very surprising to see how little has been taken care of here. And it's not just the federal government, it is also the state and local governments, too. I don't want to hear about corruption, either. I grew up in Illinois, and there's plenty there, too.

Our city has been here longer than most of yours; it was founded in 1718 - before the United States of America even existed! It was built on land that is above sea level, but it grew outwards in areas that are below sea level. We have so much history here and natural resources that are very valuable to this country. If we don't rebuild New Orleans, we are making a big mistake. How would you feel if something major happened to your city, everything was destroyed and lost, and then have your fellow citizens tell you that you mean nothing and there's no reason to rebuild? Think about it...

Let's cut the BS....we are bashing the people of New Orleans because we never once saw anyone on TV picking up a broom and looking like they were actually cleaning up the mess. Big fat black Mommas whining about the government inaction, but sitting by a pile of garbage. The blacks looting its own city did not help the image either....there should have been more control by the people, not just depend on the police. Imagine stealing a plazma TV and nowhere to plug it in!

They said on the news that the people of New Orleans left 50,000 pets when they evacuated. What kind of peolple would load up their SUV and take the good stuff from thier homes, and leave a family pet? Shame on You, the people of New Orleans. If you cant find room in your car for your dog or cat, then dont expect any sympathy from us.

On Oprah, Exxon donated $500,000 for one program and another $100,000 for some other program. BFD ! Shame on you Exxon. $600,000 is a drop in the bucket of your profits every day.....I will never buy Exxon gas again!...next time you gas up, think of how Exxon is such a cheap corporate citizen...

How can you say? "Nobody is helping us"? A Search and rescue team from Vancouver, BC, Canada was one of the first teams on the ground...they sent 30 specialists to help...a Canadian supply ship was dispatched within 48 hours to send 290 men to help....give me a break!

When New Orleans and Louisiana rectifies corruption which existed BEFORE Katrina and was worsened by Katrina, then people will stop bashing New Orleans.

When Louisiana decides to ditch the outdated Napoleonic Code for a more uniform legal system - preventing the police, DA's and judges from carving up fines, court costs and seized property.

I will avoid Louisiana for as long as I live.

I noticed people were bashing louisiana and new orleans because they built a city below sea level, this is not the fault of the people who lived there. They lost their homes, it is the governments job to help with the relief of natural disasters... and this was the governments fault to begin with. If it wasnt for the levys breaking because they were not repaired even after new orleans sent a request that they could be rebuilt to bush before Hurricane Katrina. I have no idea why people are so heartless. So many people have lost their moms and dads and children in this storm. They lost their homes and all their memories. They lost everything.... this isnt just about their homes. People need to stop being so cruel. They would be doing the same thing if it happened to them... times of tragedy and natural disaster should help people to come together with compassion and help those who are in need of it, and those who can afford to help should be helping out. I dont have much money to my name, we are very poor, but we still have managed to donate money to help the victims of hurricane katrina out. Even if its a small deed. People need to stop worrying so much about buying things they dont need for themselves and doing something good for once for desperate people who have lost everything. Its not like these people arent trying to help themselves!!! They are still fellow americans and I have no dispute to help those who desperately need it. Because what you dont realize is that many ARE trying to help themselves and trying to pick up the broken pieces of their lives and move on from this disaster...
STOP DOWNING OTHERS FOR WHAT THEY CANNOT HELP!!!!!

I think New Orleans didn't recieve the help they were suppose to get because most of the city was African American. Not to mention the is African American as well. I really believe if this happened to spokane or some other mostly white city they would have recieved a better response.
