You'll probably have to let it grow out, but if you want to get rid of the red, try a hair dye with a green base. Green cancels red. Go to a professional.

A lot of the hair colouring products that you buy for at home use should come with warnings not instructions!
It will go away. The fastest way to get rid of the colour would be to cut off the hair with the colour on it. Your hair is probably not damaged too badly now but if you keep trying to fix it yourself it could become more damaged.
The colour that you applied over the original red was probably not permanent enough to cover the red sufficiently. The time you spent in the sun, sand and surf in Florida caused the colour to fade. That's normal and happens to hair that hasn't been coloured at all.
Go to a salon and see a professional. If you really want to get back to your natural colour this would be the best way. It might cost a little more but if you find someone who knows what they are doing it will be less expensive then doing it yourself over and over again or risking having to have a serious colour correction, which can cost hundreds of dollars and many tears, because you were using drug store colours.

Wow, sounds like you've got quite a dilemma ... Well, I'm not sure exactly what to do, but, I suggest possibly washing your hair with a clarifying shampoo, which is used to remove heavy buildup from hair products from your hair. Do you see it fading over time? Maybe you just need to wait for a few more years. Also, visit a hair specialist or hair stylist to help you. I'd avoid dying your hair for now, in case that will only worsen the situation, but maybe you should dye it back to black?

Yeah the only "temporary" dye that ever really comes out is the canned spray stuff. My little sister dyed her blonde hair red with the 28 days stuff. That was two years ago.

if it was only a wash out hair dye try using a dandruff shampoo and that will help remove it quicker, if it was a semi permanent or permanent dye visit the hair dresser to get it stripped back to your original colour your hair must have been very porous to start with that is why it has stayed in so long good luck

If the hair dye has stained your dermis you could scrub it with alcohol. attempt putting a barrier between your dermis and the colour previous to colouring. Thick dermis cream or oils like vaseline artwork.

well, it does hurt your hair. my mom always warned me not to dye my hair red or auburn because red hair dye (on hair and clothing) hardly ever washes out. if you continue to dye your hair (more than your supposed to) , its possible you'll ruin your hair. so i would wait until it lightens to a lighter color, it may take 8 weeks to 3 months, but its probably worth it!good luck! :)
