Pine trees I know for a fact that the American ones come from Pinion Pines which in the west can be found at between 5000-6500'.
I have personally gone foraging with Native- Americans for them.
Native rules dictate that only the cones that have fallen on the ground can be harvested. the result is a lot of hard work .
and then you have to wash them and toast them and shell them- more hard work.

they come from the cone of a pinion pine tree. It's not a very tall pine tree. kinda short and wide, and the pine cones are the same shape.
technically, all pine cone seeds are "pine nuts" but the other ones are too small to be worth the trouble of getting them out.

They come from any pine tree . the trick is that the tree must be at least 25 years old. until then they still have pine nuts (seeds) but they are much smaller. but with maturity the seeds get much bigger..
