Maybe not the best choice but all dogs are territorial by nature. He'll bark more then he'll bite. But living in an appartment I would definitly consider a smaller breed.
Good luck.

I really hope you are not planning to get a dog if you live somewhere without a backyard. If you plan to keep a dog inside constantly in an apartment, soon you will be posting lots of questions on this site like: Why will my dog never stop barking? How do I stop my dog destroying everything I own? Why is my dog chewing his fur off in patches? Because that is what stressed, bored dogs do, and dogs that live in apartments, where they are kept inside constantly, rapidly become bored, stressed dogs.
A dog for protection is just not the best idea. Get an alarm system instead. Very few dogs will actually attack an attacker to protect their owner, and even fewer dogs will be effective enough to stop a serious attack. It's a bit of a myth that you can just buy any old dog and it will save your life and your stuff. Many dogs would rather save their own lives than save your life, even if they could. And any dog can be easily poisoned unless you take the time to poison-proof it, and then you have a useless dog and a burgler in your house.
How many of you who answer that labs are great protectors have put to the test? Have you really been physically attacked and had your dog dispatch or neutralise the attacker? I seriously doubt it.

What is considered aggressive by your apartment? Most dogs will be a good watch dog. As far as a guard dog you have your pitbulls (which are great dogs), dobermans, german shepherds, mastiffs. Most of the "guardian" breeds. Do a little research online to find out more because there are so many more that can and will be a watch and guard dog for you.

A Lab might be too large for an apartment. If you are getting a dog for protection only, it is the wrong reason to get a dog, But most Labs are wonderful dogs as long as it was not an offspring bred from a dog in a kennell that was used for breding purposes only. Nightmare!

Almost all dogs will protect their owners and homes. It is part of the territorial/pack mindset hard wired into dogs from thousands of years of domestication. Labs are good as they bark loud which deters intruders and will attack only when no other option is available. On the other hand, they are very loving and docil with family members.

Labrador's are very loyal dogs, and will protect their masters. Although they are good in nature and not mean they will protect.

Labs are great protectors. We have a black lab that's 8 years old and he prefers to sleep in the hall right outside our bedroom. When someone knocks on our door, he's the first one there.
We also have small children and he's very gentle with them.
