I would be driving up on a Friday, leaving Raleigh, North Carolina at about 3:30 in the afternoon. Would it be better to take a car or the Amtrak? I am under the impression that most of the DC area traffic would be gone by the time I would get there. Thanks for your help.

If you are driving, you should not hit too much of the DC area traffic. You are going north, and the bulk of the traffic is going south!!!

You will hit some traffic in Richmond, because you will arrive there in the height of the rush hour (5:30 or so), but most of the DC traffic is gone. You can even avoid the DC beltway, depending on exactly where you are going!!

Take Amtrak to the Alexandria station, where you can transfer easily to the King Street Metro station across the tracks. From there take the Blue then the Orange line to the Vienna/Fairfax-GMU station, where CUE city buses whisk you off to Fairfax (the city) every 15 minutes or so. LED signs at the station tell you when the next bus is arriving using information collected from GPS locator systems. On the bus, signs announce stops and street intersections. I have to say CUE is the most pleasant bus experience I've had in the DC area.

I would take US 1 North to US 15 North to US 29 North to I-66 East to VA 123 South.

I'd say with good traffic conditions, you can be there before 8 PM if not sooner.

go on map quest and see if the directions will get you there as fast as Amtrak would. If you like to drive then drive, but maybe it might be better to go by train unless you need your car there. Good Luck whichever way you go.
