Basmati, Jasmine, Arborio rice, Sushi Rice, Wild Rice, Brown Rice, Thai Red Rice and even used Black rice for a pudding one year. I don't like plain white rice par-boiled or other, not enough flavour or nutrition . Even if you are adding to the rice you can always improve the dish with a more flavourful rice.

I use both, it depends on what I am cooking. For rice pudding I use the old fashion kind, but when I am adding rice to meat like for stuffed peppers I use instant.

I use a steamer and old fashioned rice when I have plenty of time which I usually do. I also like the kind that you boil in the bag. That tastes pretty close to the "real" stuff.

I always used Minute Rice, but since my young son turned vegetarian, and rice is a big part of his diet, I went to making it the old fashioned long way, and of course, you're right, its much nicer.
