I've often wondered about this myself. I think that too many people care more about themselves than others less fortunate than them. It seems that the poorer people are more giving than the people who actually have the means to give. To be honest I don't think alot of people who have money know what it is like to struggle, because if they did they would think about what they could do to help others. And in case people start saying hateful things when I use the term struggle, I mean financially.

Society does care, but there are not very many programs out there that can help someone in need. Years ago, people were given immediate funds for help when they needed it. So please do not think that society does not care. Most of society is in debt and barely hanging on, they are near poor and homeless. This is all a sad reality. I have no idea of even where to find the start of the problem. I do not know who to blame. I wonder when things will get better, and when. And another piece of reality some never consider is that soem homeless prefer to be homeless. Some poor prefer to be poor. I knew someone that was homeless, we reached out to them to help them, and they did not want the help.

The poor, homeless and sick are societies illness. Society does care and wishes to heal it's illness. Unfortunately separatism and individualism prevents many people from investing their thoughts and efforts and thus OUR resources for common good. Competition necessitates winners and losers, haves and have nots. For the separatist, the greater the disparage between the winners and losers the greater their superiority over them. This is the nature of hierarchical power structure. What you and I both seek is more egalitarian. Which means equal. In order for us to find what we are looking for we will have think more like one mind with lots of little bodies, kind of like you hand has fingers humanity has people. Are you one person? Or are people an extension of you?

Society does - ever heard of the United Way, Red Cross, homeless shelters, etc. ?

The point is that in the USA, there is a difference bewteen government & society. That's how government thinks it lets them off the hook.

If you are not prepared to accept things, the way they are now - what are you prepared to do ? Until you reach a point, where you can do no more - it's your responsibility too. That's what it means to be a part of our society.

Umm, exuse me! I care very much about the hunger and the homeless! Ever heard of the Pacific Garden Mission? My dad works there! That place is also a homeless shelter! I sometimes go with my dad down to the allies and we take the truck full of food and give it to the hungry. Do you know how sad it is. when they rush up to the car? it's sad because the adelts run over the children!

Because some of those people will not get off their Butt and work when they can. I had a neighbor that was on disability yet she thought nothing about bicycling across town to use a free ice cream coupon. Some of those people would rather be strung out on dope then to get off their butt and go to work and support themselves and not do drugs. Take a good look at some of those bums. Some of them can work a street corner and make $30 an hour with no taxes to pay. If you want to help some one go down to the corner and invite one of those bums to live in your house rent free and you feed and take care of him or her. Me I would rather keep my tax dollars and help those who I know are working hard but can not get out of a financial bind that Katrina put them in. I help individuals not bums who choose to be on the street. Some of them their own family will not help any more because of drugs. Some of those children who go hungry do so because their parents would rather spend money on booze and drugs rather than take the money and buy groceries for their children. My husband was one of those children who grew up where the drinking buddies were more important than the children. His dad could buy rounds of drinks for his booze brothers but not food for the table or clothes for his kids.

What makes me so mad is all these hollywood stars get so popular and then donate millions of dollars to other countries such as Oprah and Angelina Jolie. Don't they know we have people dying from starvation and disease here in the US. There are familys with out a place to live and kids that can't afford school supplies. I totally agree.

Yeah really!! I am so pissed about that topic right now. My friend is in need and it is hard to find anyone to help him except for myself and a few local places. You really find out who your friends are and the so called religious people when you are in need. If you don't know someone or if you are not in the click, then you are basically on your own, especially if you can not qualify for certain government services.

There are sectors in the society that deals with that. But for us citizens who are more blest should really try out to give or help. Remember the Bible verse: " anyone among you who does it to the least, does it for Me."
