Well, please do not use barking collars. Honestly, they do not work. From experience, I know they don't work.
I know it's what everyone says, but the best method is ignoring.
If he's barking in his crate, make sure he has Toys, Bones and a blanket. Sometimes a warm waterbottle and a clock help the dog think that it's his mom.. Not always, but worth a try. And before you go, load him with treats. Load him!!! Not just a treat or two, five or six! Of course, always make his crate an enjoyable experience.
Feed your dog in his crate, and put him in there even when you're at home.
Don't wory- Tons of puppies (including mine!) go thru this stage.
There are so many methods, but all dog trainers say that if you ignore him- just for one day!- he'll never bark in there again.
Make sure also that he's peed and pood, he's fed and happy in there.
Hope this helps =)

Watch the Dog Whisperer on National Geographic Channel or buy some of the DVD's for sale from the show. They just had on a show about that subject about 2-3 weeks ago. A lady was going to get kicked out of her apartment because the dog barked all the time when she was gone. Some of the advice he gave her was to have a kennel(secure area) for when they were gone. Take the dog out for lots of exercise when they are home and he showed the lady ways to make the dog listen to her. It was all positive reinforcement.

You can't. Your dog is bored senseless and as dogs are pack animals, they are really not designed to be alone. They have been designed to be always with other creatures, never alone. That's why they come in such big litters.
The best thing is to get your dog a companion dog. This can be a little cheap terrier mongrel from the pound which won't cost much to feed. Find out from the dog workers there which sex and age would be the least likely to cause fights, and get one of those. Your dog will be less bored and less likely to bark constantly.
