Why is it that we have not seen a "cigarette comercial" on tv in years and yet almost EVERY commercial break is riddled with those for alcoholic beverages? Just a small quandry about the inner workings of our society and the rules of politics as they govern these two things. No prayer in schools, no cigarette commercials or ads in magazines, yet promotion of alcohol products everywhere you look. Does anyone else find this interesting or even worth pondering? Interesting that we seemingly are always hearing something about some money monger suing some tobacco company for something yet I do not seem to recall even ONE mention, EVER about anyone suing any alcohol company for anything and I find it very interesting that this is not a bigger deal. If I were a tobacco company I would be raising all kinds of havoc over this yet they do not seem to be and if they are then we are not hearing about it. I just think it a very large public injustice to target one and not all. Hypocritical!

Everyone I have seen so far have interesting points. Although I think it a nieve thought to believe that alcohol doesn't hurt anyone. It does and there are thousands of dead folks and kids to prove that. Not to mention battered wives, of which I was one and alcohol was a large part of that. Drinking causes just as many health issues as smoking. Personally, second hand or otherwise. Vehicular homicide is NOT caused by smoking. I agree that SOME drinking is healthy. However, to say also that kids are not drawn to alcohol advertising, I think is terribly nieve and dismissive. I worked for a convenience store for a while and I can say, for a fact, that the numbers for my store for the year before I got there showed alarmingly that that store lost $40,000.00+ for the previous year in thefts. Thefts of alcohol. All but 6 specific incidents were done by minors. Tobacco thefts : $15,000.00 and very few were minors. 26 in all. District numbers (0ver 100 stores) were very similar.

Simply because for some reason, drinking is more accepted in today's society than smoking. There are a very few cigarette ads in magazines but you are correct in saying alcohol is everywhere. There are t-shirts, hats, and swimtrunks that advertise alcohol but I haven't seen any apparel with cigarettes. Like I have said already, smoking is not accepted in today's society near as much as drinking. As a smoker, I feel like an outcast because of today's society. I hope I was able to help some, although probably not.

I agree with your statements. Did you know alcoholism is the only disease you can get yelled at for having? As for the marketing aspects, I don't think it matters what commercials are shown as long as kids have a responsible adult to give them the facts. So many fingers are pointing to others, but the problems start out in the home. Take some time to get to know your kids and try and teach them to make informed decisions. After all, that is all we can do. FYI - Sending your kids to school is only the first part of rasing them. Spend time with them and teach them at home too. Lead by example. I shall step down from the soapbox now.

An issue that often rankles with me. In my career as a nurse, having spent time in the ER , I have seen numerous alcohol related incidents, from the horrific traffic accidents caused by drunk drivers, to the self inflicted falling/cut on a bottle/Bra stuck in nose (dont ask) incidents presented to us in the form of intoxicated patients. I also grew up in a home marred by an alcholic father, a prince when sober but a violent pig once alcohol was added. The whole dont smoke but drink up issue is very hypocritical (Also, alcohol contains excessive calories, helping to add to the problems of the obese, the quickest growing drain on healthcare resources.)

Well, I feel that alcohol doesn't hurt anyone (adult) unless they are abusive or drink and drive. Whereas cigarettes cause cancer, cause illnesses in children, and is downright affects not only those who smoke them, but those around the person smoking. They also were a HUGE hit with minors at the time the commercials were pulled.

Everything in moderation. I wouldn't mind seeing a nice cigar, a microbrewed IPA, or a good Cabernet Sauvignon advertised, but I object to Camels and Coors Light and Cheap Boxed Wine being advertised, people are partaking of these for the WRONG reasons. ;-)

I thoroughly agree. Alcohol might desire to kill extra human beings than cigarettes or perhaps marijuana. even nonetheless, i do no longer think that we would desire to continuously dictate flavor. some human beings decide to get their buzz from cigarettes, some from alcohol, some from criminal drugs, some from unlawful drugs... that's in basic terms seen extra socially proper to have a martini and Xanax than a cigarette or a joint. i've got not got fun with the government telling us what we would desire to continuously and shouldn't do with our very own bodies. What, is lung maximum cancers lots worse than a pickled liver??? they might desire to ideas their very own employer. that's not the Joe Camel classified ads that make teenagers smoke...that's the mild style, and it makes you look so cool...(in basic terms kidding.)
