I would like to chat with my Polish speaking friend in Germany, I speak only English.

It won't work. If you speak only English you won't know where (and, believe me, it'll be EVERYWHERE) the translation is wrong enough to avoid the message getting through.
From what I've seen here, it'll be easier than your friend masters English than a monolingual, English speaker grasp the basics of another language. Sad but true.
If you want to talk to him in Polish... just LEARN some Polish and NEVER trust any online translator.
