What do you mean by cheaper? There's no such thing as a cheap remodel. If your talking gutting the kitchen and replacing cabinets your talking big $$$. I just did my kitchen and it cost approx. $50,000. Once you get new cabinets you'll want new appliances, floor, counters etc. Its never ending. If you just want a new look you can resurface your existing cabinets. You can use any type of covering, you could repaint or just resurface professionally. Call Home Depot or just go into their kitchen design center. Tell them your considering remodeling your kitchen. They will send a measure to your house to take existing measurements then you can meet with a designer. That will only cost you $100, but you will get a blue print and design layout and a estimate for cost. Just tell them you want to go the least expensive route. Totally worth the money.

Did you try painting the cabinets? We did not like the look of the natural wood cabinets of the kitchen when we bought the place. We painted them red and the kitchen looks much better. Cheaper than investing in new cabinets.

First, don't use dealers' contractors! Their charges are way too high. Put a notice up in schools and other reputable places. Don't use your church congregation unless you are absolutely sure you can trust---recently, there have been many scams herein.
Get at least three offers (bids). Generally, the safest way is to use a licensed contractor, BUT ALWAYS investigate thru your state building contractor board. If there is even one unresolved complaint against the contractor, DON"T use him/her.
There are great builders out there at very fair prices who don't happen to be contractors, but you really need to be sure of that person's work and cooperative behavior.
Always get reputable referrals from prior customers. Try to visit and view and discuss the work done.
Installing cabinets can be tricky. But they're done all the time.

Go to home depot and purchase the pre-made unfinshed wood cabinets. Stain them with the color of your choice and put a urethane on them. Also for added punch finish the tops with crown moulding either stain or paint them. These cabinets will look awesome and will cost minimal amount. Many sizes and styles to choose from.

be careful though. Cheaper is not always a good choice. You need more detail. Yes, there are less expensive ways to remodel your cabinets, you can check with a store like Lowe's are a simular store that has classes on this type of stuff. Good luck to you.

Try Lowe's, Home Depot or any building supply store for cabinets that have already been built and can be bought in sections. If you buy them unfinished they will be less expensive and you can paint or stain them to your liking.

Hiring a good carpenter is the only way you could remodel in a cheaper way. He will recommend ways as well as do his means so that you maximise use of wood, design, space, materials, etc. The higher worth he could be charging will all make up for what he could contribute in the process.

I agree with going for pre-made from Lowe's or Home Depot. We went with Home Depot when we redid our cupboards and food island, and I think they look great. You can find a lot of variety in design and finish. If you can't install them yourself, they have people who will come out and do it for you.
I think hiring a carpenter is a great idea too, but unless you a have a very good referral, I think you are taking a big risk.
