Because they have chosen (from the Greek "hariesis" which means "to choose") to "walk apart" from orthodoxy and orthopraxis.

All Protestants and fundamentalist Christians need to repent immediately! They are committing the sin of PRIDE by continuing to believe they have the answer; they are not listening to God!

According to your definition we are all heretics because we are all walking apart. Orthodoxy is not defined as 'correct' or 'true'.

All people need to repent continually. Pride is a sin we can all admit to.

"Heretics" are people who disagree with *my* "orthodoxy." How do you know your orthodoxy is correct? Perhaps the Nestorians or Monophysites are correct? Or any other of the ancient Christian groups? Oh, wait -- YOU know the truth -- and unlike them, when you say that, you're not "committing the sin of pride." Get over it and become an ecumenist, you hypocrite; no one has 100% of the truth.

It is questions as divisive as this that reaffirms my decision to be agnostic......... there is one God, and a multitude of faiths, each professing its tenets to be the correct one, Christians have added another dimension, and thus created "heresy". The "god" I understand is omnipotent and knows the heart of man, regardless of religious teachings.... never forget how many times the "New Testament" has been edited to suit an era or belief system......... good marketing, just not much substance.

You are a Fundamentalist if you seriously beleive that. And England was a fundamentalist country, that was one of the things on the 95 thesis posted by Martin Luther when he founded the Protestant Church.

I understand why you would say what you have, but consider this. Today, hundreds of years past the decisions of those who abandoned the fullness of the truth for traditions of men, people just don't have an historical perspective. In otherwords, they haven't made conscience decisions, and therefore do not bear the guilt their forefathers did. Pray for the unity that Christ prayed for, that is what we can do.

They are not listening to God? Hmmm I disagree. But this is interesting:

The Catholic Encyclopedia lists three, main categorical distinctions in Protestant beliefs: Sola Scriptura (recognition of the Bible as the only infallible Word of God), Sola Fide (the belief in justification by faith alone), and the priesthood of all believers, as opposed to a few, select men.

It is true that Christians recognize the Bible as the only infallible Word of God. It contains the fullness of the Gospel, and was divinely inspired. Catholics believe in the Bible (or at least their version of it, with several extra books added), but contend that Catholic Tradition (decrees of the various popes and councils) shares an equal footing with the Bible. Moreover, the Catholic doctrine holds that the laity (non-clergy) are incapable of properly discerning and interpreting the Bible without help from priests and church authorities.

The next distinction listed is Sola Fide - the belief in justification by faith alone. In Roman Catholicism, justification is a lifelong process that can only be achieved by participation in the seven catholic sacraments.

The final doctrinal distinction listed in The Catholic Encyclopedia is what it refers to as the universal priesthood of believers. In Catholicism, ordained priests are believed to be imbued with supernatural spiritual powers of mediation.

It’s important to take a look at just what a priest is. Quite simply, a priest is a mediator and an intercessor. 2 Timothy 2:5 tells us, “For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.” Jesus became the mediator for all of mankind, disposing of the need for a priesthood. Under Jewish law, the temple priests conducted the sacrifices for the cleansing of sin. When Jesus took our sins upon Him and died on the cross, he became the final sacrifice.

The passages from the Catholic Encyclopedia do a good job of demonstrating the differences between Catholicism and Protestantism. The passages from the Bible illustrate clearly that the doctrines espoused by the Roman Catholic Church fly in the face of what the Bible tells us. The Bible is the complete and inerrant Word of God, and was meant to be read and understood by all of God’s children, we are saved by grace through faith, and our only priest and mediator is our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

I'm Protestant, and I do my best to follow God's Word. I don't claim to be perfect, and I definitely don't have all the answers, and neither does anyone else. That's why it's so great that we have God's forgiveness.
