Many dogs do this and although there are many theories, there really is no definitive answer - Dogs will eat darn near anything.

As far as a dg is concerned, if it smells good they wil eat it and remember a dog has a different opinion about how poop smells - humans think it generally stinks - now dogs on the other hand smell poop with great interest - to the dog each poop smell tells a story and some of the stories are quite exciting.

Dogs get a ton of information from another dogs poop - when a dog smells a strange dogs poop - to the dog what he is smelling is that dogs business sound byte and it reads something like this:

Strange Dog - (Unique Smell like a finger print)
Healthy - Not Neutered - Male - Looking for Trouble/Mate
Have smelt this by that dumpster on the coner - He will be back

the dogs nose is so much more sensitive then the human nose. It has been proven that some dogs can actually smell some forms of cancer, or when a cardiac arrest is going to happen, or when a seizure is going to happen - These are all examples of how strong and how accurate a dogs nose can be.

There are many articles available on the internet on this topic.

Your best bet is to keep the dog away from the poop - if the dog can't find the poop he can't eat the poop and don't forget to pick up a dog tooth brush and some dog tooth paste and maybe some breath fresh dog biscuits for good measure OK?
