Does the fact that I am a Catholic make me responsible for all those who came before me's failings and mistakes or just my own?

Can't say I ever have or would ever have the need to. Just because someone's ancestor did something way back many years ago, how is that a future generation's fault? If this is in reference to what I may think it be, I'm curious to see how many hypocrites will be found.

I like your questions. For peoples answers will be opinions and only facts to thier own truth. But you can not blame the ancestors no more than you can blame yourself how you raise your own children. How would you know who are truly your ancestors if you if your parents were not willing to teach you? The blame is more on yourself and your parents. Why should ancestors be blamed for our faults when I blame myself for my ill will? The only reason I accept things as they are for the simple fact of "it is what it is". And this applies to the character of each individual different from the next. My ancestors are the long line of prophets that stemmed from the loins of adam(pbuh). And I blame them no more than I blame myself. PEACE BE UPON YOU!!

It is just mis-understood. What it means is: The children will suffer for the sin, from the third and the fouth generation of those who hate Me. Meaning people from way back , who denied the Lord and the teachings, God said the children will suffer for the sins of their Ancestors. So that could mean in many ways. Like poverty, The blame does not lay on the children , but they will suffer for the sins of their ancestors. The blame lays on the Ancestors and those who did not know and Love God. So it could also mean, that the children ,will follow in the footsteps of their Ancestors and continue to ignore God and mock his teachings. The sins continue on.

I believe that all persons are unique individuals...so I would never blame the ones who live today for the faults and failings of their ancestors (or in your case the "believers" who have already died). They (the people who live today) have the choice to continue indulging in their ancestors/predecessors' wrongdoings (or doing worse), or they can change and become even better than them (the erring ancestors).

Frankly, I reckon that everyone is responsible for the mistakes they make themselves. You cannot be held responsible for your ancestors' faults. But I'll counter ask a question...why did God sometimes punish an individual as well as his or her entire family? Was it fair? Confusing isn't it?

Once a child is 12 years old, he or she has to accept that what they do has consequences. They can't blame their parents or ancestors.

Every individual has the right to live his/her own life without being judged based on things that happened before they were born or out of their control. You should never assume that a person will follow in their predicestors footsteps

No, I place the blame on the evil individuals who indoctrinate children to believe they are inherently sinful because of the fact of their birth. As such, I consider the vast majority of 'Sunday Schools' to be legitimized child molestation...

My ancestors are responsible for their own failings, it does not mar me in any way. People are who they are and should be accepted as such.

I accept everyone as they are not because of their ancestors.
Though I do find it interesting to see the ancestors of those we read about in the bible. Wow
God is so awesome!!!
