You don't learn to breed dogs on the Internet. The last thing we need is another backyard breeder breeding just because he can.
Have you ever been to a shelter on euthanasia day???
There are thousands of dogs put down yearly because everybody thinks they want to be a breeder. If you love your dog, don't do it.
I know this is not the answer you are after, but please do not IM me with yet another immature reply. I've heard them all.

If you've never bred dogs before...never. Leave it to the people that have been doing it very well for years. If you insist on breeding...females should not be bred for the first 2 years. For either sex, there are health certifications needed to ensure quality puppies, and there are minimum ages for those (around 2 years). The most common things to certify are hips, elbows, and eyes. These are areas prone to genetic problems in certain breeds...large breeds like yours should have at least hips done. It's just a series of xrays reviewed by professionals to determine the likelyhood of hip displaysia. You also need to make sure both dogs are healthy and current on shots prior to breeding. There is a lot of work, time, and money involved in breeding dogs...thats why most people shouldn't do it.

Don't breed your dog. The world has enough of them. 9 out of 10 dogs, purebred or mutts never get to live out their entire life in a forever home. Don't breed your dog. Get it spayed or castrated. If you want more puppies, go to your nearest animal shelter..... it is overrun with unwanted dogs of all ages. Adopt one.

You don't. You get her spayed so she has a healthy, long life with you. If she does not get spayed, she is prone to ovarian cancer, uterine cancer, mammary cancer, pyrometra, etc.If a female dog is spayed before her first heat cycle, her risk of developing breast cancer is only 0.05%. If she is spayed after having only one heat cycle, her risk of breast cancer jumps to 8%. If she is spayed after her second heat cycle, that risk becomes 26%... that's more than 1 in 4! Spaying a dog after her third heat cycle may reduce the risk of mammary carcinoma (breast cancer) but not appreciably. Also, there are the messy cycles, stray dogs in the neighborhood. One preventative surgery is much less expensive than paying for surgery and medicine for a life-threatening condition, not to mention the suffering of your pet.

The most important reason to spay your dog and not breed her: to prevent unwanted pets! Please watch the documentary video 'shelter excerpt'. http://borntodiepets.com/html/video.htm

are you a novice? Think about it.There is alot of things to consider. Has the dog been x rayed for hips? Do you know the history of the parents? What are you going to do with the pups if you can't sell them? Do your research first. To many homeless pets

The female should be at least two years old to have healthy pups. Males come into their potency in the about the same time.
