If the individual is at risk for harming him/herself, they can be involuntarily hospitalized. The person can be kept against their will in the hospital for 3 days (called a 72 hour hold) if deemed a threat. After that, they have to be released, remain voluntarily, or be committed. To be committed, they have to be "2PC'd" (or "two physician commitment"), in which two physicians agree that the person requires immediate psychiatric treatment and is not safe to be released. (At least, this is the case in the state of NY)
If they continue attempts long enough, they will either succeed at harming themselves, break down and seek treatment, or be hospitalized.

Something is wrong
is it attempted suicides
Is it just cutting of themselves for no reason which people do do this maybe as a cry for help
Some people who have serious problems hurt themselves maybe without know why example....chewing fingers, lips, inside cheeks till they bleed
People show emotional pain in different ways but needs help
what ever the reason the person needs to talk to someone a very good friend who they can trust a therapist someone and soon before it goes too far

Well for one thing, the feelings of worthlessness and hoplessness only increases. Second you'll have to increase the injury to get the same amount of feeling.
Trust me i know.

if the person in question is really asking for help, sooner or later they will be committed to a sanatorium to be cared for. If the person wants to kill himself, they will.

They will have many injuries and if they continue the injuries might turn into death.
