Because religion divides. It is hypocritical. Because of your faith, you are already separate from those with different or no faith. You are fundamentally at odds with those with different beliefs. This is by design, but those who are religious just can't see. They are blind. If we are not a part of your religion, then somehow you see us as "unenlightened." Religion is like a gang, you're either a member, or an enemy.
Also, people of faith attack us as well. Those who have faith are not innocent, either. Have you ever heard the term, "SPREAD THE WORD OF GOD" ? That means your leaders want you to force your ideas onto others. And I have experienced this first hand...Christians used to harrass me on my college campus and told me I was going to hell if i didn't go to their church. That's no exaggeration. It was a fear tactic. And to me, that's not what Christianity was about -- it was about love. Or so I thought...
I don't "lash out" as you say, I am ready to have a civil discussion about it.
I think the idea of QUESTIONING someone's faith cannot even be discussed. I've tried. And the typical response is to try and SILENCE any type of dissent. That leads to OPPRESSION. Just look at Muslim women. They have to hide their bodies. They have no freedom or any level of importance in society.
Religion is bad idea, but I don't think faith is. Keep your faith, I wish you well.

I don't think MOST of those are out to "dispel and destroy". I emphasize *most* because there are always exceptions. I think it is that there are always those of different beliefs that are out to destroy other's beliefs and they get defensive about theirs. There are a lot of questions on here about why the atheists believe the things they do and the Christians straight out attack. This is not the way to change a belief. They get defensive and they will attack your beliefs too.
This is of course, a two way street. And I see it on both sides. There is a lot of hate going both ways and it really is a shame.
I believe the Christians should leave the atheists alone. And Vice versa. You said it yourself, nothing can destroy your faith, why would Christians think they could change an atheists beliefs? And they are beliefs.
I am a Catholic, I am just explaining what I see on here.

i am Christan, and have been ever since I was young.
I think some of the idiots who try to destroy your faith are misguided. They just don't understand that we have seen the enlightenment that God has brought upon our souls. They get caught up in the talking snakes, the burning bush, a woman being born from man's rib, and a mortal man rising from the dead. I know, it sounds fantastic, and they will try and tell you that those were parables. They are wrong!!!. those were actual facts!! the boble said so.
Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain. My glowing green ring told me that.

Don't take it personally, they're just angry and insecure in their lives and for some reason they feel the need to take it out of us. Some of these people actually spend the entire day here doing nothing but insulting us, and having the nerve to say we're the ones who are intolerant. I've seen more hatemongering here from atheists than any other group. You'll get to know the names of the worse, so just skip by their insulting questions without bothering to read them. It takes some time to find legitimate questions, but if we'd just ignore them, they'd go harrass another group. And yes, it is their calling to try to destroy faith, they're miserable, hence the constant insults, so they want everyone to be miserable with them. They're actually very pathetic.

I've often wondered the same thing. There are many religions whose beliefs I don't share, yet I don't find it necessary to attack them. Just accept the fact that not everyone believes as you do.
