What a greater part of the media doesn't like to adress is that the poor sector of New Orleans simply could not afford to leave. Many poeple in the inner city were dependent on public transporation and did not own cars.

Another overlooked story is the fact that many said that they started out withn two days of landfall, but the only routes out were so congested that they simply turned back and decided to wait out the storm. LA got hit with several hurricanes in the past few years, and I think people had just gotten complacent with the idea that this one wouldn't be "the one" that took the city down.

New Orlean's lower classes (almost the whole city) had no way of getting out of the city. Most of them had no cars and relied solely on public transportation. This means that everyone that was left behind, had no way to escape anyway. Of course there were lotters and I'm sure this could have happened, I suggest you put down the claim, as most of the people who were not helped were innocent. The real problem is that it was already known that most people in New Orleans would not be able to exacuate in case of a large hurricane, but still no one persued measures to change that. It must also be kept in mind that many of the looters were not from New Orleans and arrived later.

I am sure that some did. most i think were just stubborn.

for thoes who say that people did not have cars and such and could NOT get out...they had 5 days notice that this was going to happen. 5 days. in 5 days they could have walked far enough to be out of the danger zone.

many things should have happened in new orleans. but this was not a failure of government this was a failure of society.

young HEALTHY MEN sat there and watched the elderly die at the dome. they complained that noone was helping them..i will say it again. NOONE IS REQUIRED TO HELP YOU. people need to take responsibility for themselves. these people could have pulled together and done something for the community. but instead they chose to act like animals . and stop the people that were trying to help (police, fire, national guard) from helping and force them back into the role of law enforcement. they could have organised themselves but because of inflated EGO's this is imppossible.

yes there were handicapped and elderly that could not help themselves. but i watched people (young healthy people) on news interviews point at an old person in a wheelchair and say "that person gonna die because they aint got no water." then TAKE A DRINK FROM A 1 LITER BOTTLE OF WATER AND WALK AWAY, all the while crying that noone is helping them...
would it kill you to give granny a drink of your water?

some people did try to help. some of them..most were 40 or 50 years old tried to take water and food to the people that could not move around. but these people were the minority when compaired to the people that wanted to lie down and give up.
and cry about noone helping them.

when people start to take responsibility for themselves disaster's like new orleans will stop happening....the city might get destroied, a lot of people may die. but the real disaster is the human element that surfaces in what is left. will that element show compassion, leadership and perseverence. or chaos greed and apathy.

Unfortunately Yes. However, they have rationalized themselves..no wait they havent...maybe they got new stuff and have a wonderful life now!..No wait they havent'. So they stayed back to loot waterlogged shops for items that are purposely useless to them. Just the principal of theft by tragedy was important. Hmmm.. Nice morals

Those are the same folks who would have looted shops any way any time. There are bad apples in every group.

Some folks just did not have a way to get out.'

many couldn't leave and some looted to survive. Even the police said if it was looting to survive, they let them be. I don't remember what show it was on, but I was glad they said it. i felt the same way you did, till I saw that show.

Its a Liberal Paradise. They expected the government to come around and get them out!

And they re-elected the same problem!
They deserve what they got!
