Trust me, I'm a cat lover. I've owned them my whole life. But I was curious. Wild housecats are running wild all over the US, destroying native wildlife, and depleting other species' food supplies. Hunting free roming housecats in the wild could help this problem. You can always say; "We could just find homes for all of these cats", but deep down you know that this would not be practical, and the cats that were taken in would never be adopted due to their temperments. They would end up being destroyed anyway. So, should hunting them be legal?

I sent this message to the sonofagunguy below, but I will also share it with the rest of you:
I'm a bit of a hunter myself. I have been on a number of pig hunts in Santa Barbara County for this very reason; to eliminate a very destructive pest. Hunting is about preservation, and preserving the "natural" wildlife is paramount.
Thanks for your answers so far everyone.

I find it most unfortunate that we cannot have a debate with out it degrading into insults. A couple of you are revealing you intelligence, and from the sound of it you should keep it hidden. Please don't answer if you're only going to spew insults.

Yep...cos of irresponsible cat owners. Too many feral cats means too much of the natural wildlife disturbed.
And this question is to the gunlover up there ^^...have you not heard of hunting coyotes etc? Do you think that hunters eat the coyotes? Sheesh. Ya gotta keep things in check.

It depends on where you live. Where I live, cats are considered to be "wild animals" the second they leave their owner's house---even if they have a collar on, and can be shot the same as a raccoon or squirrel. That is why I always encourage people to keep their cats inside so nothing bad happens to them while outside. Even if it is legal, it would be wrong of you to shoot them simply because they annoy you. Call animal control and have them picked up. It is morally wrong to shoot an animal unless you A) intend to eat it or B) your life was in danger and it was the only option. Please call animal control and seriously take a good look at yourself. You need to be a more compassionate person.

No, hunting is or should be strictly for food, hunting just to kill something is wrong and not a true sportsperson. What if a family cat got lost and it got killed? I can only hope that people be more responsibile and take care of their pets, neuter and spay and not just throw them out when they move adding more to the problem. hey, they sure take good care of field mice. How would you like to go to your wood pile and have it over ran by mice? I think a cat or 2 around to take care of that problem is necessary.

No it should not be legal to hunt cats in the true meaning of the word, they are domestic animals and normally don't run wild, the ones that are should be caught and then try to train them and find them homes.

No, it shouldn't. i understand where you're coming from but how would you be sure that it was a wild cat? I have 2 and they only come inside at night but during the day they're all over the neighborhood.I'd be pretty pissed if 1 of them got shot being mistaken for a stray.

Depends. What were you planning on hunting with them? Don't forget that housecats tend not to form packs, so it'll be difficult to hunt big animals with them but maybe you could gat a couple to co-operate and hunt rabbits or other small mammals?

Same thing with deer. When you hunt them, it's not going to help with their population. They're always going to go back. So NO. Don't hunt cats because of "damaged property". This is a stupid post. I let my cats roam freely because THEY BELONG OUTSIDE.

Yes but since the largest populations of wild house cats are in cities, you would still not be able to hunt them.
The organizations that our taxes pay to control animals should be rounding them up and getting rid of them.

Too many pets would be hunted and killed as well and I'd be heartbroken if that happened to my baby.
Nice one Billy, send me a email but don't have the decency to have your email address confirmed so I can reply.
To comment on your email ... Who gives you the right to say that cats can only be kept indoors. We've had both outdoor and indoor cats but we have always kept our cats inside at night.
I can honestly say not one of my cats has ever killed a koala.
