Dude, believe me you could start now and become proficient in it if you are dedicated and keep your interest, you can pull it off, and I say that with regard to any Martial Art you may study.

Ninedemonsgod has it all wrong and with SOME respect to him, but very little respect to his answer, I don't have any problem dropping names or calling someone on an seriously uninformed answer.

There's a lot more to ninjitsu (or any Martial Art) than fighting with a sword or shurikens, or any other weapon for that matter.

Weapons use are mostly for competition or tournaments today. Ninjitsu is not a dead art there are in fact quite a few schools that practice it, one of the first people to bring it here to the States was Frank Dux (he named it Dux-Ryu) and his teacher though it's not as popular as some of the other disciplines out there.

It CAN teach you fighting techniques just as any other Martial Art will, but learning to use sword techniques such as kendo, or Iaido, that uses bokken (or wooden sword) adds more spirituality (note that spirituality does'nt mean religious) to the art and it can be an option for you to learn later.

So don't let someone say that it's a dead art or that it's useless, because it's just not true. take it easy and stick with it.

NO! Get over it! It's a dead art! That's like as ask "can I start learning to be a Rome legions at age 12?"

There's no more castle to raid, weapons such as sword and shuriken are useless today, there's too many technique that will make the art a obslete, and the list goes on.

Of course! I wanted to learn fencing at that age, but my parents said, "No! NO! We are not in the Feudal Age anymore, silly! Why learn that?!" They just don't realize I love stuff like that and my career requires the study of weapons. At least they let me buy a $30 katana. But my point is...you can. It is a sport-well kind of, but you can! I can't, but do it! Follow you dream! I hope you try it! :)
