I just read someones answer that Heartguard can do this. I never heard that before. The alternative of not doing heartworm prevention seems worse than a possible nuerological side effect. Is this true?

the breed I raise can't take Heartgard..However, they do great on Revolution..It protects against nearly all parasites..Roundworm, tapeworm, Lyme disease, West Nile, fleas ticks, ear-mites, mange, etc.... It is newer, and availble at most vets, but you may need to call around..It is a spot-on-skin liquid.

If you prefer the pill preventative, you might go for Interceptor rather than the more popular Heartgard... It is less toxic to certain breeds.

It is true, but it is EXTREMEMLY rare! The Heartgard literature mentions it. I'd rather take the risk of using Heartgard than take the risk of not. Your dog is more likely to get heartworm by not taking it than get neurological problems by taking it. The important thing is, if you see any signs of a neurological problem (regardless of what caused it), you should get your dog to the vet. Heartgard is generally more effective and more well tolerated than other preventatives. A couple others available are Revolution (topical) and Interceptor (tablet). Some breeders claim that collies and collie-mixes shouldn't take Heartgard. However, studies have proven that even those sensitive to ivermectin (active ingredient in heartgard), need a substantial overdose of the tablets to react. If you have any concern that your dog is sensitive to it, there is a test available...you just swab his cheek and send the swab in to the lab with your payment. Normal once-a-month dosing is perfectly safe for dogs that have tested negative.

I have not heard that. I have used Heartgard for a long time for 8 dogs and never had a problem.

I think you gave your dog the neurological problems, just like it's no wonder you step-son is in special ed with an ignorant, annoying step-mother like you. Poor kid. Poor dog.
