Knife and spoon to the surprising of the plate. Forks to the left. I even have considered shrimp forks and dessert spoons sideways on the surprising of the plate. yet another selection for the shrimp fork could be around the salad or bread plate counting on the type you're placing the table. in particular circumstances with a water and wine glass there is not room for the greater plate. The napkin can the two pass under the silverware or if folded fancy, on the plate.

Looking at the place setting, the fork goes on the left side of the plate. The knife goes on the right side of the plate with the sharp edge pointed in the direction of the plate. The spoon goes to the right of the knife. If you are using all the different forks and spoons please add add'l details and I will answer more completely.

You place the fork to the left of the plate, the knife to the right with the rounded side toward the plate, and the spoon to the right of that. Salad fork goes to the left of the dinner fork, if you're being that formal.

start the table setting with the large MEAT KNIFE, laid down to the right of the plate liner with the cutting edge pointing to the plate. Next the MEAT FORK is placed on the left of the plate liner. Next to it, on the left of the meat fork goes the FISH FORK, if such a course is served. The FISH KNIFE has its place to the right of the meat knife.

I think in the tv show, WKRP, Johnny said you work from the outside in. Salad fork and soup spoon farthest out, dinner fork and knife beside the plate.
However, this site shows different layouts depending on the type of meal.
