Maybe too many children are allowed on here. If it was restricted to 18+ there might be less ridiculous questions. And spell check should be mandatory.

I have found this to be true, not only here, but on other communication sites as well. I can't tell you how many times I have presented a point on a message board somewhere on the web only to have people respond who have obviously only read the first two sentences of my two to three paragraph post. I think a lot of people are just eager to argue and talk and don't really take the time to understand the point of the topic.
And as others have indicated, I think a lot of people here are just after the two points that come with posting an answer. This is perfectly understandable, seeing as how we all will be presented with a brand new sports car, a dream home, and a lifetime supply of beautful models upon reaching Level 7. Ha!

I think both you and your friend are right. I imagine some are in it for the points only, and others just don't understand. Maybe those who don't understand should have tried harder to stay awake in 'Interpretation of Literary Materials' class.
But that's not to say that all questions on this forum are easy to interpret. I've seen numerous questions that were bears to figure out. Some questioners, in my opinion anyway, should have tried harder to stay awake in writing class. Some of their questions are just too broad in scope. They need to be narrowed down to specifics for people to be able to contribute with possibly valuable responses.
Well, I hope you weren't asking just to spend five points. Ha Ha. That would be an interesting twist to being point driven. You know, being addicted to spending points rather than earning them. Many people suffer a similar ailment when they get their hands on a credit card.
Also hope you won't think I responded just to get ten points. I could guarantee myself ten points by just spitting out five quick and dumb answers at two points a piece. Hmm. With that said, I'm now wondering whether there are people out there who find writing dumb answers to be a turn on--you know, a fetish of some kind. Oops, I hope you won't interepret my answer as dumb. I'm not aware of having any fetishes.

Yes, I think the Toronto Maple Leafs will have a good year. Oh, hang on, can you repeat the question?
But seriously folks, the reason that some answers are not answered properly is the simple fact that they are in hurry to be the first to answer, thereby thinking they will be picked as best answer. What they have fail to realize is that a good portion of questions end up going to a vote as opposed to being picked by the questioner. I don't think it a case of a lack of basic understanding, but simply people rush too quick to answer.

Yeah, like the girl who answers all the religious questions with one word: "Christian."
She is clearly a born again points hound.
I have to admit that sometimes when I read a question that makes utterly no sense, or is filled with bigoted comments, I give my pat answer: "Stay in school."
The questioner probably doesn't get it, but I hope some do.
Edited: I believe that she means the people are too points crazy as in "they want those points TOO much. Think about it before you condemn her spelling.

Nah they succumb to human nature and give into the compulsive need to 'have their say'. The deluge of irrelevant answers often makes it hard to distinguish the bull crap from the credible, well informed and potentially helpful answers, somewhat defeating the purpose of Yahoo! Answers, but people will be people and we're all juvinile to an extent. Those of us who aren't...need to lighten up.

I think that more likely is the scenario that many of the "question askers" are lacking basic communication skills-like writing, grammar, punctuation and the ability to compose questions that actually make sense.
But...that's just me!

The hunt for points, the rush of being the first to answer, the thrill of having your answer being voted best answer.
I guess there are many reasons.

Sometimes, when we read the question, our personal experiences lead us to think the question means something when it actually means something else. This can be caused by something as minor as a single word or phrase.
Sometimes the question's phrasing is...iffy.
