i'm not being flippant- This is a genuine question.
My parents have got a border collie, who theyve had for years, for the most part he is lovely, but every now and then he will literally go psychotic!, he snarls and snears and goes to attack people- it's sometimes quite scary, particullarly because its usually over nothing.
He was rescued from a begger as a tiny pup- and apparantly his mum was the same (so we were told).
My partner had a b/c as a kid and said she was just the same.
is it a character trait to these dogs?

OK, PLEASE READ THIS: I come home from work to find a new un-ordered pup tied to the tree in the back yard, yep It's a collie, (thank the wife)

when At doggier training: out of 50 dogs, mine is the only flipO
that needs to go home because It's such a flipout freak, trainers suggest this would possibly work out better when she's a little older, (even though 1/2 the other dogs in class where younger then her), needless to say nothing ever changed, I would soon just pull a gun on a cop then get another collie!!!!!!!!

This could likely mean you are not giving him the exercise or attention that he needs. Border collies, when bored or idle, will do whatever necessary to entertain or please themselves. On another hand, he may simply be grateful that you rescued him and wants to protect you.

So yes it could be considered a character trait, as border collies are high maintenance dogs, but they are loyal and loving as well and may just be protecting you who saved him.

A lot of them are because they are seldom used for what they were bred and they get bored. They are not good house dogs or pets. They need a job.
But, have the dog checked out at the vet. Sometimes brain tumors or other conditions can cause a drastic change in behavior!!!!!

border collie can be very aggressive, but on the whole they are normally good natured.. they are very protective... like super protective.. so if a plastic bag is floating down the street towards u she wud take a massive psycho at that!

but not all are like that... i went to see some b/c pups.. and every time they heard a car horn they ran for cover.. under the car lol.. hmm was funny.. cos they came out to watch us leaving.. and srept out then toot the horn and the all ran under the owners car lol.. and then crept out agen.. and horn.. and creep etc lol.

They're just active - always thinking and evaluating. Your parents need to bring him to obedience and socialization training, and to be constantly giving him a job to do. Border collies are NOT low maintenance dogs!

these are working, thinking dogs and have a stronger need to work than just about any other breed, it's almost cruel for them
not to have a job to do, your dog might be going insane

Not the ones that I have been around. They are all great dogs, not psycho in any sense.

yes, and to sum it up for you, its very bored. border collies have alot, and i mean alot of energy to burn, so if they dont burn it off they get snappy. hope this helped!
