Thank you all for responding to this question.

Sherri girl - Prejudices are proably a major factor in your life with all things. Poorest answer.
Old guy - Worshipped as Gods in ancient Egypt, Cats wiped out the "black plague" carrying mice.

To all who are concerned about smell - Try not flushing your tolets and see how you make the house smell. Keep a cat's box always clean, keep the cat healthy and you won't have a problem. Ignore the cat or any animal and you stink.

Like any pet or child you raise, they adapt to you. Selfishness, biting, attitudes, feelings and many other traits. Look close at your pets and children, they are reflection of you.

A face of tears - I thought my cat (Mysti) loves to fetch. I will throw a ball or toy and in a flash (even in total darkness) she has found it and dropping it at my feet waiting for me to throw it again.

I love all animals, even the human kind..lol
"Do unto others as you would have them do unto you". Understand?

Because people don't understand them. Cats are very independant, but are also very loving. You can't expect them to act like a dog. There is usually an explaination for when they don't use a litter box. Cats don't like to use a dirty litter box, you have to keep it clean for them. Also, keep your cat healthy, they will quit using a litter box if they associate it with pain, like with a urinary tract infection. If people would take the time to understand and learn about cats, they would see that they make great pets!
Cats do not smell at all. Their urine certainly does, but if you pay attention to what I just said about the litter box and such, your house won't smell like cats at all. I have two cats, and you would never know if you didn't see them.

Hi Wayne...simple answer: ignorance. A good example... Mac vs. PC. Most people say they hate Macs, YET!!! they've never used one so most just say they hate them. I love grilling people to prove this point of how ignorance breeds contempt.

Some people on the other hand just had bad past experiences with a cat so without further investigating their reasons later in life they just come to reason by disliking cats. There are cat people who don't like dogs too for the mere same reasons.

My husband WAS one of those people. I think he just thought it was "stupid" or "girlie" to like cats. He SERIOUSLY hated them. Well, I love them. Well, for a gift one year a got him a puppy. It peed and crapped everywhere, required a TON of attention, bothered the neighbors and tore everything up. We eventually had to find the dog a new home.
Needless to say, all the while my cats were self sufficient, easy going, low maintenance animals that didn't cause any trouble. Now he LOVES cats and I have to tell him that we can't have anymore! He keeps bringing them home. Its very cute!

Because cats can be finicky sometimes. They don't love all over everyone all the time like dogs do. Cat owners tend to be patient types and it makes them feel good when their cat chooses to spend time with them. Dog lovers feel offended when a cat doesn't drool all over them.

The American Pet Products Manufacturers Association did a study of pet owners this year. It said American families have about ninety million cats and seventy-three million dogs. Americans keep one hundred forty-eight million fish and sixteen million birds. They keep eighteen million other small animals like rabbits, hamsters and gerbils.

As you can see, there are a lot of cat lovers out there.

It may be because people who don't like cats are more of a magnet for them than people who do like them.

Cats see the "dismissive" squinting of the eyes and the turning away of the head as a non-aggressive action, it's very non-threatening. So, they tend to go to these people.

Being people who don't like cats, they are bothered by this behavior...which only makes them like cats less.

Also, cats have a lot of shedding problems and dandruff, which causes problems with people that have asthma or allergies.

Finally, people see dogs as a more friendly domesitcated animal. Generally speaking, dogs love attention from anyone who will give it. Whereas, cats are more selective.

i am a person who loves most things, but.....
Cats are sly and very selfish. They will go to anyone who will give them attention and then **** in thier garden!!
They are evil,They destroy fish ponds. they chase innocent baby birds and little animals like frogs and mice, just to slowly murder them and then present thier mangled carcus to the owner. (nature- i know, but i dont have to like it)
They keep people awake half the night with thier catawalling, and they fight each other to the point of death.
they go into strangers houses, and often attack people (only the other day my daughter was bitten by my friends cat, whos known her years- and my daughter didn't pull its ears or anything) but they would not be of any use as a guard of any kind because theyre so bloody lazy!!!

when faced with all of that how can you love a cat really?
wouldn't you prefer a nice dog? theyre friendly, LOYAL and of some actual use.

Because a cat (unlike a dog) cannot be cowed into submission. That just really rankles bullies and authoritarian control freaks, just to name two types of people that have a hard time with the concept of a cat.

scare the crap out of me but also made me laugh. He was just playing of course..what a silly cat huh?

I don't either! My cats are scrumptious! Punta is curled in a ball next to me right now. She's CUTE! And irresistable! Don't get me wrong, I love dogs, too, but cats have my heart.

One of my coworkers is fond of saying to me, "I like cats, I just can't finish a whole one!" How rude is that?

P.S. after reading some of the answers, our cats are THRILLED to see us when we get home! They're so lovey and soft!

Cats aren't as affectionate as dogs; dogs are better for most because they play, run, fetch, and show love. Cats tend to be by themselfs well dogs love - and thrive upon - human attention. The downside is dogs need higher care, and cats need lesser care.
