I have been using St. John's Wort very successfully for about six years. It works excellently for me, and that is all I can really tell you. I can only use mainly holistic type remedies, as I am allergic to penicillian and a lot of more "traditional" medications are set up on a penicillian base. The only thing I know about the 5-hydroxytryptophan is that it is a man made chemical compound which closely matches the natural tryptophan found in turkey and other foods. This also has worked for some people as it works with the serotonin production in your body. as a relaxant and sleep inducer. Any of the choices need to be tried for several weeks in order for you to notice a difference. Good luck to you, I hope this information helps.

St John's Wort and L-tryptophan are drugs and all drugs are controlled poison. Just because it is "all natural remedy" doesn't mean it doesn't have side effects. Go see a doctor before you decide to treat yourself (assuming you haven't already). The problems with St John's Wort or L-tryptophan purchased in Walmart, Walgreen, ect. is lack of consistency in it's potency. If you go to a doc he can write a prescription for L-Tryptophan, take it to a compounding pharmacy and they will make up your capsules, at least this way you are guarantied consistent potency and quality.

5HTP is okay at night to help you sleep. St. John's wort is great for depression. Bach's rescue remedy is okay for temporary spells during the day. If your depression is serious, and these don't help, please go talk to a doctor. You'll be glad you did. Also, I have found that meditation is MUCH more of a stress/depression/anxiety reliever than any medicine. Good luck.

I would say 5-HTP is the better of the two. It is a serotonin pre-cursor, so it will help you body create it more naturally. Low serotonin level have been linked to all the symptoms you listed. I would recommend 200 mg a day, start of at 100 mg and work you way up. It does not have any side effects.

I would say of the two probably St. John's Wort would be safer. But if you want to use more of a natural remedy, try SAM-E. You can get it at Walmart, Osco, etc.
