I've owned both kind of vacs, and the shop vac does not pick up as well as an upright.
I'm assuming by the question "why do women" that you are a man asking such a question. Next time you see the woman ask her if you can help strain your back, neck, and pelvic bones with the handy dandy shop vac!!!

Who wants to lug a shop vac around their house? And, the shop vac doesn't brush up the carpet the way a nice upright does.
