You need to fill out FAFSA, you can do this online at www.fafsa.ed.gov
You'll need to apply for a PIN number if you don't already have one, so will your parents. If you don't have this, you'll have to print and submit a signature page via mail.
Once your FAFSA's been filed and reviewed, you can log in and view the results. What happens is FAFSA determines your "expected family contribution" based on your prior year taxes as well as your parents. This information is then sent to schools of your choice. The schools will notify you of your total benefits.
Keep in mind school benefits vary from school to school. Each college gets so much money from the US Gov and can appropriate it as they determine. So one school may give you the max allowable US Gov grant and another may only give you half of that. You have to take a look at all your options.
Also, keep in mind, if the school you really want to go to doesn't give you the best financial package and there are extenuating circumstances, the school financial aid office will typically accept a letter explaining your circumstances and why you feel you should receive more funds--this worked for my sister!
Good Luck to you!

Ask the financial aide advisor at the college you will be attending. Also check with advisor re subsidized and unsubsidized loans that school offers (such as a Stafford loan). After making FASFA application you should receive award letter prior to start of semester anyway but definately check with financial aid office at school to make sure you are getting all the bucks available to you.

After you fill out the FAFSA you will get an award letter. This will tell you how much financial aid you will get and how much you have to pay for on your own.

If you applied through FASFA, your school will send you a letter that will tell you how much you will get and if you are eligible for work-study.
