why did my tv screen splatter

You might have looked at it the wrong way!

One or more of your crt guns are weak, arced or you got smacked by a power surge.

Or your big screen tv is out of convergence and needed to be aligned using a cross hatched generator.

Or you have a problem in the convergence board.

Or the liquid coolant in the crt guns is contaminated. On older Magnavox units a pro can suck out the liquid using a turkey baster and replace the liquid. The liquid is a special clear type of antifreeze-coolant.

i presume you have a tubed tv? the tube has blown.

if you are going to buy a new one go for palsma not LCD, LCD come with a refresh rate so it doesnt matter how good it is you will always get shadows in action movies.

It would definitely help if you were to elucidate the fault using different jargon so that we mere mortals can cease trying to be clairvoyant and give sensible advise !!!

it might help if you told us the type of tv you have-different mediums (plasma-lcd-crt etc) have different symptoms as regards to tube/display failure.
