Oh Boy what lame answers... In 1932 the national socialist party defeated the Hindenburg party. America was in depression and most of the world reeling from world war 1. The Brown Shirts Nazi party pushed Adolph Hitler to run for election at that time. He was the great communicator for Germany. And soon with the new autobahn people needed to move around. The German powers to be asked Zundap Porsche Audi and DKW to build an affordable car durable enough for low price And Dr. Ferry Porsche won the contract The peoples car was born. Stuttgart was out of the question so Wolfsburg Germany was chosen for production of Volkswagen,Volks for Folks Wagon for Car The rest is history. The actual Adolph Hitler involvement in the car was limited to picking the best design Speed over 100km fuel economy ease of servicing were high on the list of wants. But after war broke out the plant was converted to make Kublewagons "scout cars" And Swimervagons "Anphibious Scout cars" The porsche plant and audi plant were bombed to dust.

Yes he did! In a sense. In 1932 whilst sitting in a restaurant Hitler designed (Hitler was an artist and design was something he was quite adept at) what would become the Volkswagen (translated means: "car of the people"). He had the vision of a car for everyone, when at the time only the rich could afford to drive. In order for that to happen he had certain criteria the car had to meet, it had to: carry 5 people, cruise up to 62 mph. at 33 mpg., and the most difficult specification (the one that had caused others to fail) it had to cost only 1000 reich marks. Hitler contacted the head of Daimler-Benz and gave him his design and specifications. Jakob Werlin, head of Daimler-Benz in turn gave this to a long time colleague and perhaps the best known if not the best small, light-weight car designer, Dr. Ferdinand Porsche. Dr. Porsche was ultimately successful in manufacturing the car and in 1934 the V1 was debuted. Hitler had many other ideas that he was unable to realize before the end of the war, but they have since been realized by the countries that defeated Germany, mostly by the U.S.

Volkswagon was designed sometime in 1942. It is a unique designed car. It does not have radiator for cooling the engine. It is designed to run in desert and other distant places where no water is easily avialable. As regards the invention of the car, I am not sure about it. It might be possible that Hitler must have directed to design the card which could work in desrt and other places. If I say that Hitler has invented the Volkswagon, I may not be wrong.

Hitler commissioned Ferdinand Porsche to design a "people's car" which is literally what Volkswagen means in german. It was part of an effort to build up Germany's industrial base. Germany was then, as the rest of the world, in a deep economic depression.

The idea was that people would contribute part of their salaries to building up this car industry, and much like FDR's social security scheme, once they had contributed enough they would get a free car.

Of course, WWII interceded, and German manufacturing was focused on war materials. VW began producing a personnel carrier, not unlike the Jeep. Interestingly enough, the design for that personnel carrier appeared as a VW model in the early 1970s called the VW Thing, which saw production for a couple of years.

No. He got Ferdinand Porsche to design a car that would cost no more than eight hundred marks which anybody could afford in order to win the election. I understand they didn't get through because of the war. Also the Autobahn wasn't finished til much later. Both good ideas. See how wars get in the way of stuff?

REMEMBER, HE WAS AN ARCHITECT, AND WAS A VERY HANDS ON TYPE LEADER AND WAS VERY LOVED BY MOST OF THE WORLD (TIME MAN OF THE YEAR) UNTIL THE WAR BROUGHT OUT HIS WORST
