I believe I am carrying the fleas into my home after gardening in my backyard where stray cats like to gather. In the last 2 weeks I have bombed the house twice, washed bedding and clothing frequently and treated the rugs with flea killing powder. The flea population is down but I was bitten again last night. Being the sole host to fleas is like having a big X on my back! Too bad I can't use Frontline and I am not willing to put a flea collar around my neck. Need help!

Treat you yard with one of the various flea, tick and pest products at home depot, follow the instructions, you won't track any more indoors. You may not be able to use Frontline or Advantage, but it you treat your indoor cat(if you have one, not a stray but an indoor cat) with "Advantage" you won't have a flea problem indoors. I have three adult cats, I rotate giving them a treatment of advantage ever couple of weeks and fleas are not a problem.

I found a tick on my wifes leg after she had been in the back yard. YUK!... I got a bag of flea, tick and yard treatment from home depot and spread it over the back and front yard. The problem is gone. I feed a lot of squirrels and birds in my back yard. You can't treat wild animals but treating the yard (not directly in the areas the wild animals feed in) keeps the pests(fleas, ticks) away.

You need to spray your yard. Especially before it rains and afterwards. Birds and other wild life bring fleas into your yard. I woud use a mosquito spray on your clothes try something natural. Spray around your doors as they will come in underneath as well. This area got hit with those things many years ago and I still remember what it feels like to get a flea bit. Hurts like hell. There is also natural insecticides but they are costly to keep putting in your yard. I was able to keep the fleas down allot by spraying Ortho. Pick up your throw rugs and wash them, fleas like to hide and breed under them. Steam clean your carpet. Constantly clean your home even if it looks clean. Mop with mr. Clean. When it freezes, the fleas will die. It sounds like you need the humane society's help or the animal controls help to get rid of the strays. Make sure there are no openings under your soor so fleas can't enter. When you get done with gardening, put your clothes right in the washer and wash them.

I would strongly suggest that you call in a professional exterminater for your home and yard and have the yard treated monthly. As long as you have stray cats hanging out in your yard, you will always have fleas in your year and if they are in your yard, they can jump on you and get into your home. Keeping the yard sprayed and trying to cut down on the stray cat population are the two best answers. Have you talked to your towns animal control person to see if your town has a trap/spay-neuter program for cats? If they do have that program, when the cat is captured, before they do the surgery, they also provide the cat a nice flea bath.

The best of luck

Put a cut up flea collar in your vacuum cleaner, it will kill the ones you suck up. They can lay between 40 and 50 eggs a day and do it for weeks!!! There is a spray called Knockout made by Virbac. You can spray it on your carpet and under the couch and all. If you set off bug bomb they go up in the air and come down and don't get to all the places where you need them. Good luck.

Hi Gregory...inside your home you can use boric acid (aka BORAX) which is very effective at killing fleas in the home as is safe as well. Boric acid kills fleas both by causing dehydration and by acting as a stomach poison to them yet won't harm humans or pets. Repeat the applications in about 2 weeks to prevent any missed larvae from hatching.

Borax can be purchased at any hardware store. Here is an article about it and how to use as well: http://www.seedsofknowledge.com/fleas.html

Consider spraying your backyard garden with citronella (also found at any pet/hardware store) as this will rid unwelcomed stray cats there as well.

Terminix, or some pest service. I think they can do stuff to the outside so they don't come in. At the least, they'll probably have suggestions. Good luck!
