Put it out and nothing else. He'll eat it after awhile.

Cats should have a food that they like and it should be good for them too. So choose a premium food, not grocery store crap.
Cats can fast for up to 36 hours without doing damage to them.
My five cats know that what's for dinner is what's for dinner. They can choose not to eat it and hope that next time they will like the menu better. I have never found a canned food that everybody is just crazy about. And they will eat a little if they are hungry or decide to go without.

First of all, stop feeding him table food or food scraps. I've done this in the years ago and it took forever for the cat to eat 'cat food' again. The last time I had a cat - all I gave him was 'cat food' and never had any problems.

As long as it's not prescription food, you can try different foods, or adding gravy for pet food. Try feeding a better quality food. My cat will only eat chunks in gravy for canned food, and rarely eats dry. Canned food is better for cats...dry food makes them gain weight and cats on canned food maintain or (if fat) lose weight. Avoid foods with colored pieces (whiskas, friskies, etc)...they're not good for your cat. Be careful if you switch foods...most pets will get sick from sudden diet changes. Also, make sure to "meal feed"...don't just fill the dish and leave it...feed a measured amount twice a day.

Avoid giving your cat treats or table food. Instead, offer him his food once in the morning. Leave it down for about fifteen minutes. Then take it up. Do this again in the evening. Eventually, he will be hungry enough to eat, and he is certainly not going to starve himself. Avoid obviously cheap cat foods, like Wal-Mart brands, because they are not very good nutrition and not made of the choiciest meats. Try Purina or Friskies. If the kibble is all your cat has available, he will learn he'd better eat it, or he's not going to get anything.

We make cats finicky by changing their food too often. They need to have a basic dry food and some canned food once in a great while.

If you are desperate to get him to eat give him tuna, or pour the juice from it over his food.
If he's not starving just let him eat when he gets hungry.
