tried using windows movie maker to make video cd but as it uses HiMat it plays on my PC and laptop but not on my standalone dvd player attached to the TV. Would appreciate any help on which format I need to use and which software would provide me with what I need to save it and edit it.

I use freeware winDV to transfer (using firewire) from my digital camcorder & save it onto the hard drive as .avi format ...download program from http://windv.mourek.cz/

I use dvdSanta to convert the avi to DVD format & it also burns to DVD. Download dvdSanta from http://www.dvdsanta.com/

I recommend both programs. I have sent DVDs to friends America aswell as here in the UK & had no problems. I did start doing some editing aswell but found it a pain so now I don't bother, I just burn it to DVD as it comes..lol..So I won't try to recommend good editing programs

Ps Make sure you burn to whatever DVD type your player supports..either DVD+R or DVD-R or it may support both (& same with RW's).

Get a copy of Nero or Roxio Easy Creator. They have DVD creations software included that will take a video film of any format and convert it to the right format for a DVD. (Check the CD that came with your burner, it will probably have one of the two of it)
