yes I like attention, who doesn't?
No I'm not depressed. But then I used to be. I know negative attitudes are stopping me but they are so strong, I live in the past sometimes, I live with regrets, but then I've come a long way over the last few years.

There could be a number of reasons why you enjoy making yourself suffer. Do you think you are self harming? Self harming is another way of saying self soothing.
It could be that this is an emotion which you understand and know how to deal with so you are cormfortable with it.
It could be that it is a way of gaining control. Rather than allowing other people to make you feel horrid, you'll make yourself feel bad so you have the illusion of control. This is very common in people who are stuck in the past.
It could be because you want people to notice that things have not been good for you, but don't know how to ask for your needs to be met. Therefore you wait to be "rescued".
It could be a sort of negative self-nurturing. A part of you knows that there is some unresolved stuff in your past that needs "fixing", so you make yourself feel bad so you can fix it. I could ramble on for hours on why this is always doomed to failure.
I would suggest seeing the help of a professional counsellor, possibly one who has Transactional Analysis in their "toolbox" if you resonate with the desire to be rescued.
Until then may I suggest a few things?
Exercise your emotions in the same way you would exercise your body (analogy coming up). When you realise you eating emotional junk food, change it and put on something to benifit rather than damage.
Ensure that you laugh a lot every day. Laughter decreases depression points by tons and cures all sorts of ills.
When you feel stuck in the past there are a number of exercises which can bring you in the present so you can remind yourself that you are an adult who is strong, capable and survived. My favourite is:
Get in touch with each of your senses. LOOK round the room. Take note of every shape you see along one wall then every colour along another. What can you SMELL? What can you TASTE? Take note of how your clothes FEEL on your body. What can you hear? Then remind yourself what colour knickers you are wearing (or something equally silly that will make you laugh) Then TELL your self "I am [name]. I am [age] and you should believe it.
When you feel stuck in the past, take note of how old you FEEL. What would that little girl really want? do the exercise to bring you to the here and now. Then allow your adult grown up self to nurture the little girl. eg if you think your little girl needs hugging, curl up in a ball, possibly with a doll or pet symbolising yourself as a child. you get the idea?
I'm really pleased that you've come a long way and you can recognise this next stage needed for your growth and happiness.
All the best

You could be depressed. It is a treatable disease, you should talk to your doctor before it gets worse and interupts your life/work. It is much harder to get back to normal than it is to prevent a landslide.
