No they are probably relieved they don't have to think of anything to say. I close my eyes and pretend to sleep during a session

I don't think it is rude, just seems a bit awkard. I've experienced the same thing. I just relaxed and let her do her job. I would talk a little to my hairdresser if I have been going to her for awhile but the manicurist isn't really even looking at you cause she's busy doing her job. If you talk too much then she may make a mistake and lose focus.

Dear heart, yes it is rude to avoid talking to people and if you tried to understand, they would too, and in some ways, you will connect and you may end up with wonderful new friends. A person who can barely speak a language should try to learn a few words and share those she knows to them, It is a wonderful way of making new friends sharing knowledge about another culture.
Just be your charming self and you will see... It works wonders!

Most manicurists are Vietnamese, where I'm at. If they know they don't speak (somewhat) understandable English, they usually won't try to carry-on a conversation. I guess if you really don't understand, then you could politly say "I'm sorry, I just don't understand."

Its not rude, its your choice. You are paying for a service, if you decide to converse while getting it done then fine , I used to watch the tv at the nail places, they all usually have one. Or sometimes i would talk to another customer next to you, but you definately dont have to talk. Especially if you consider this a relaxing break for yourself. Just chill or close your eyes, whatever you want to do. Tracey

It doesn't bother me to not talk to them because most of the time they chattering to each other in a foreign language anyway. If you ask me, they are rude for doing that, so I just don't say much.

Just say you are tired and want to relax. Look away, close your eyes a little and relax. They should get the hint. Besides, you're getting a manicure, relax and enjoy the pampering.

Please learn how to spell properly; what is cuz? What is cant, i and what is im?
Anyway, your are not required to speak to any manicurist or hairdresser. If they ask you questions or you've been going to them for quite a few years then you probably will speak with them.

Usually I just hum a catchy tune, or every couple of minutes I'll tense up and then scream "Ouch! You just drew blood!!!!"

That usually freaks them out.
