I really like the Teach Yourself series. I'd highly recommend it- get the complete pack with the two CDs. You can buy it in any bookstore but I would recommend Amazon.com because they sell it much cheaper than other retail bookstores. My advice is to load the CDs onto an MP3 player and practice all the time. Watch the spanish channels available on your cable tv, watch your DVDs in spanish, listen to loads of Shakira in spanish, and surround yourself with as much Spanish as possible.
Besides that- immersion is the best tool. Go to an area of Mexico that does not receive many tourists or where ever you can for at least a month.
It shouldn't take you too long, good luck!

1. Total immersion, living in a country where everyone speaks the language. 2. Study EVERYDAY, at least 45 minutes(In a class, not on your own with books, etc). If you have the opportunity to enroll in daily classes its much better than studying 3 times a week which is better than 2 times a week which is better than once a week etc.( Though I dont recommend studying for more than 1.5 hours a day.)
Also, become exposed to the language as much as possible apart from the classes(TV, Music, Movies).
Most importantly, try using it as much as possible, if you know some one who speaks spanish try a conversation.
The worst thing you can do in language learning is be shy, so last, dont be shy or embarrassed!
Also, I would NOT recommend tapes or videos. I admit I dont have experience with them, but I dont think they are very effective. Language learning is interactive and practical, enroll in a community college class, again, preferrably one which studies many days a week if possible, even if its just a 1 hour class.

The best way to learn any language pretty fast
is dipping yourself in it. Go to a spanish speaking country and take nothing but a travel guide with a few basics to help you out. you'll be learning as you go along at a much faster pace than any class or book. Alternatively get yourself a Spanish Boy- or Girlfriend and speak nothing but Spanish. That's how I improved on my Spanish

The fastest way would actually use most of your time, but for a less amount of time.
How to learn spanish for dummies + some other spanish books. Since you chose spanish, it would be easier to learn. Since they dont have alot of their own special characters. Like The chinese or japanese (which i want to learn) lanuages.
(Im getting the dummies book for Learning japanese soon! :])
Get a dictonary too. Take a class. It could be online or in real time. But learning from another PLUS teaching yourself leads to many questions, and many answers. And thats a good and fast way to learn.
Get one of those..recorded in things to listen too. Like when your going to the store or for a walk. Just pop the tap or CD in, and listen away. Do as it says. :]

Move to a Spanish speaking country and live with a family that does not speak a word of English. I'm serious, because you would have to learn Spanish or nothing would happen and you would be miserable.
