Yes,but very great support, clear thinking leaders and plenty of them who are prepared to be martyrs. The rank and file martyrs are discounted to become names on wall plates at memorials.

if you want case studies, study history.

Comparison with violent, very very much slower to get results.
Effectiveness depends where you live.Look at POLL TAX protest.

If done correctly and if the whole population participates then yes. Look at Ghandi as an example. The current conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan and Lebannon show that conforntation does not work the way the agressors expect and can have a detremental effect on the civilian population

If you don´t believe in non-violent resistance methods there is only one solution left, war!
Civil war, street fight, you mention it. War the magic solution.
We have to keep improving our democracy, until we reach what we are looking for, or until some genius works out a new, magic, system, social and political perfect.
Until then just keep trying, involving more and more people. We will win together not fighting each other.

Non-violent methods WILL work IF there are enough people involved. You MUST outnumber the Authourities to have any chance of success.Just remember-the police+other govt.depts,+military still only accounts for a small percentage of the population,so non-violence DOES have the scope to work, especially if the majority of the population is on your side.I learned this when I visited India once, that is how it was so easy for Ghandi to obtain independence---most people were prepared to join in his peaceful demos and the like.

I like to believe they do ,but having looked down the wrong end of an ak47 I also know that you need a very large number of unarmed people to make any impression on a small number of heavily armed people, that said people of all races do seem to have an innate sense of fairness hence the guy with the AK didn't shoot me although he clearly had the upper hand , I do believe that we all change the world every day in how we carry out our daily lives and treat others

They only seem to work in countries that have relatively liberal governments. The most successful example is perhaps India, but still people died. Given subsequent history Gandhi's campaign in South Africa can be deemed a failure. They obviously didn't work in China - the Tianemen Square massacre being an obvious example.
