Those who worship Buddha as a god make the same mistake that people do with Jesus; both were men who became enlightened and who represent the potential for all of us (to have that same experience which resolves the questions of life and death and shows us what we really are). Most of the spiritual buddhists (e.g. Zen practitioners) know that the Buddha is not a god. There is the story in buddhism where someone asks him, 'Are you a god?'. And he says 'no'. And they they ask him 'then what are you?'. And he responds, 'I am awake'.

I believe Budha never wanted people to make his teaching a religion. He created a good way to live. After his death, other made him a god and his reachings a religion.

Eventhough I am not familiar with Budhism, but knowing that Budha was such an humble person, he would not have called himself a God. Its very much possible that he was a prophet of God.

They do not worship Buddha as God. I see the original Buddha as a prophet. You have heard of another prophet named Jesus? Actually, some theologians believe that Jesus may have studied with the Buddha because their teachings are so similar.

Never.
He just pointed out that root cause of all evil is 'desire' and one should be able to renounce all forms of desire other than bare minimum necessities by overcoming temptations. He never created a religion too as such and the followers of Buddha created 'Buddhism'
