The government definitely wants us educated to a point. You can't expend too much resource creating competition for the educated elite that have a say in things. Fact is lower tier works is what is needed.

Great insight Crystal

Education is very important to Economy, so even if the Government doesn't "care" in a touchy feely kind of way...beleive me it "cares" in a "dollars and cents" kind of way.

Did you know out of all of the the "highly developed" countries (i.e. world powers) Ours is the only one with a high enough immigration rate to meet the population demands of our ecconomy for the next 100+ years?

(birth rates of developed coutries are typically very low)

As our baby boomers age, there are not enough of their children to replace them in the workforce. ALL the "developed" countries are facing the same crisis during the next 20-50 years. In order to have enough workers to support an aging population and keep our economy strong for all the things we value in our country (Commerce, Technology, Medical Advances... etc.) We have to IMPORT people.

Guess what, a fair share of those people come from "developing" countries... Where literacy is low.

If we were Xenophobic like Certain Asian Island nations or Members of the EU, we could have excellent lieracy numbers too.

Food for though.
