From a former drop out, encourage him to stay in school. At this age any job available and making money or just hanging out sounds appealing. In a few years he may realize he wants to go to college and study, that's where the girls are. A GED is a must, but it doesn't give you the knowledge of high school subjects. College at that time is much more work and takes longer. In the end should he drop out all is not lost. signed: a former high school drop out and currently a college prof

No don't let him drop out. In order to get a good job he will at least need his high school diploma. I would go and find out what the real problem is. If he is struggling he may need some help. Try giving him an incentive to graduate, but DON'T LET HIM DROPOUT!

That is a difficult position to be in.However your son needs to realize that life is a whole hell of a lot harder with no education behind you.I should know I had my first kid at 19.Met her father at 15 left school.Never went back and now the only job I can get is a cashier at a grocery store.Which any 15 yr old can get.So if he wants a loser life by all means drop out if not stick it out and make something of himself.

well, i think that it would probably be a wise choice to let him drop out if he's not into school and failing anyway. i sure would enroll him into the quickest GED classes and make him get his GED.
You can make him go to school yes, but to force him to do well? No.
Some kids are actually better off getting their GED. Colleges are more acceptable to certain teens.
The bottom line is, I think your teen is having some major issues...depression is a symptom....whether it's his environment or illness (many unknowns out there that affect the brain chemistry).....
I'd have him evaluated first and then go from there.

NO WAY! He will regeret it later. I dropped out in 10th grade and my parents were like whatever and I regretted it and was angry at the sdult figure because it is our job to watch over our kids even as teens!! My kids must finish HS no matter what. College is thier choice but not high school.

If there is no convincing him, then make a deal with him. If he drops out he HAS to get GED and a JOB. But, I have been told that the test is very hard. A friend of mine (and no he's not stupid) has taken the test twice and failed. Best of luck!!!

This desire to drop out is his reaction to something that is wrong in his life. You need to discover the source of the problem. I would not allow him to drop out, unless you have checked into why he is asking to do so. There is more to the story than just not wanting to go.

No, I would encourage him to tough it out. If you let him drop out he may live with you and let you support him for the rest of his life! It's time to teach him now that he will always have to do things in life that he doesn't necessarily like, but it just has to be done (like working - he can't just not work because he's tired of it...) Good luck to you - that's a tough age, I have one myself!
