Do not buy a Rover, they are prone to head gasket failure. Go Japanese or Korean, reliable cars and will hold their price. Avoid French. What more can I say.

I have had the car almost four years , It has been the best car i have ever owned it has not let me down once never broken down never failed to start and always economical. I have driven it on 500 mile trips and never been uncomfortable i have had regular oil and filter changes (every six thousand miles) and other than the usual routine maintenance such as disc pads and one new exhaust the car has not cost me a penny in repairs.
The 406 is like driving a limo for family car running costs , I have actualy just had a bad accident in the car and more than likely it will be a total loss but i know what car will be replacing it , yep you guessed it i am looking for another 406 19 TDL
thats one review
here another

I am now the proud owner of a 4-year-old 406 1.9TD. And what can I say - 'What a car!'. I love it. My previous car was a Ford Sierra 2.0 Petrol and this new 406 delivers all the power I'm used to with the extra comforts of a newer car.
Power steering comes as standard, which is a godsend in my opinion. I wondered why my arms always ached after a long drive before! As I read in a previous opinion the full lock does not give as tight a turning circle as I am used to but it's only a niggle.
Other extras include electric front windows, air conditioning and a 10 CD changer. The windows have two position button - press them hard and the window opens fully. This can be a little annoying, especially if it's raining!
The air conditioning works hot or cold. I thought air conditioning only gave you cool air but it actually de-humidifies hot air too. This makes de-misting your windscreen quick and easy.
As for the CD player, Wow! Fantastic. It holds 6 discs and the sound quality is fantastic. A remote stalk on the steering column can control the CD player, together with radio and cassette player. The radio comes with all the normal features including traffic information scanning – which interrupts your CD or current program to give you your local traffic bulletin. This is a good feature but the volume levels between playing a cassette, for instance, and the traffic info cutting in can blow your eardrums out if your not careful!
The car itself handles very well. Good acceleration and braking, especially good for motorway driving. It can cruise easily at normal motorway speeds (and a bit more if you need it!) and still has torque to overtake. Urban driving is a joy too. The power steering makes short work of the twists and turns of country roads and the hard suspension gives you a very steady ride.
Fuel consumption is very good – doing about 650 miles per £40 of diesel. That works out to about 6p per mile.
The comfort factor is good. The seats are soft and fully adjustable to give a good stable driving position. The only niggle I will mention is the lack of room for my clutch leg. I like to be able to extend my leg behind the clutch while I’m driving, but there isn’t enough room to do that in the 406. I could move my seat further back, but that would make the other pedals hard to reach.
Overall the car looks great, handles well and come with enough extras to keep me happy. Fuel costs are low; it’s safe (twin airbags) and very spacious inside. I made a good choice
that review was quite a newer model but there definatl;ey good cars ive had 2 go on thats the car for you search them on the net

Hey i had a rover 416i! yes a 400 series and last month the engine jammed and burnt. I had to pay so much money for repairs that it is unbelievable... I have a vauxhall astra now i hope this is ok. PLEASE DO NOT BUY A ROVER I HAVE BEEN THERE DONE IT GOT THE T SHIRT.. I don`t know u personally but were all human beings and i do not want another human being taken for a ride. Please listen too me i am serious u will regret it. They look very nice but let u down always. I payed 900 pounds in 5 months for repairs and yet still engine let me down. Car wasn`t worth the money i spent on it. I know ur desperate for a car but surely not that desperate. You can get a decent car for 2000 pounds. Try autotrader, ebay and car auctions in ur area and surrounding areas. Even if u have to travel there it will be worth it. xx

Rover 400 suffer from, head gasket failure, audio equipment, lights, immobiliser, battery, ventilation components. All of these do go wrong on the Rover, yet the Honda Civic that it is based on suffers from non of these problems.I would recommend a Toyota Avensis. Good on fuel, reliable, and plenty around with one owner and low milage. It is the type of car the appeals to the older driver, so usually have been looked after and there are bargains out there in Auto Trader or Ebay.

stay clear of the rover, buying a toyota/nissan type car, it will be an older one for 2000 pounds and quite a lot of these are not very well looked after as people ignore servicings as the cars are reliable!
have a look at the last of the ford escorts, 1600 petrol or 1800 td, available up to 2001, not state of the art and im sure loads on here will slate them but a decent car for under £2000.

Do not buy a rover, stay well clear. With that kind of budget I would go for something Japanese with some good history maybe a Civic or an Accord.
