I've heard good things about soy protein powder, and I've heard bad things. So do you think Kashi's Go Lean Soy protein powder is okay? I'm trying to gain weight the healthy way and all everyone is telling me is "protein protein protein". So the soy protein powder has 23g of soy protein per two scoops. Any input?

This particular product isn't intended to help you gain weight. In fact, its intended to help you lose by acting as a meal replacement. You could gain weight with it by using it as added calories rather than a replacement, but because all the Go Lean products are also loaded with fiber, its going to make you feel full. A regular protein powder, whether its from soy or other sources, will be better for that use. However, you may want to go to GNC or someplace like that and ask questions about products that are specifically designed to help you gain weight. Trader Joe's is a great place to find protein powder without spending an arm and a leg. The nice thing about tasteless protein powder is that you can add it to almost anything. I've added it to pancake batter. The flavored ones are nice if you're just going to mix it with water and drink it.

As to your original question, I know that some people disagree but I believe that soy is good for you. Its a much healthier way to get protein than meat, as the fat content is lower and the types of fat are healthier. I do eat meat, but I also eat various forms of soy pretty regularly.

Listen: you need to do 200 minutes of cardio a week. Remember fat does not turn into muscle, so you need to lose your fat while putting on muscle. The 45 minute thing is not true, but don't over 60 minutes at a time.

Do 5-10 minutes of cardio to warm up, then do your weight training. Do 30 to 60 minutes more of cardio, then go home.

The best time to eat is just after your workout within an hour when your metabolism is raging. For your muscles, incorporate some isolated soy protein or whey protein. Whey is more potent but the soy tastes better!

Don't look at your scale as the be all and end all, but get a measuring tape to check your progress, and that will show more tangible results.

Good luck and stick at it.

For men, soy protein is very very very bad. It contains a plant hormone, which in the human body, has a similar effect to estrogen. Estrogen will inhibit muscle growth and, in men, cause them to store fat (and sometimes in strange places). For women it is not as bad, but should be avoided. As a women, if you weight train it will also inhibit the toning of your muscles. Plus soy protein has the lowest Net Protein Utilization (a measure for the amount of protein actually used by your body) of any protein you can consume.

Use whey protein powder or egg protein power. These are the best sources of protein and have the highest NPU values.

BTW, despite what an earlier posting states, soy is NOT good for your health, in fact it is just the opposite. With the exception of eating actual soy beans (edimami) and naturally brewed low sodium soy sauce (which are both good for you), soy should be avoided.

I don't know about Soy protein powder, but I drink soy milk. Soy milk doesn't really change anything. It is just milk without animal products as far as I know (+some estrogen is supposed to be in there). Protein is good for keeping energy up a long while. And exercise is great for weight loss (until you build muscle that leads to weight gain, but that doesn't sound like your goal right now). Anyways, exercise will take you far.

Soy protein provides a healthy way to get non-animal protein into your body and get those muscles leaner and bigger. It is natural and has many healthy effects on the body. Soy protein is also credited with significant decreases in serum cholesterol: Low Density Lipoprotein LDL(the bad kind of cholesterol, yuck!) and triglyceride concentrations (Bad also). WOOOHOO!.The FDA also claims that "25 grams of soy protein a day, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of heart disease." One potential downside is the taste. Some people really like the soybean flavor mixed with other enhancers like chocolate or strawberry, while others may dislike the taste. If this is the case you can buy WHEY PROTEIN instead. Whey protein powder is an equally superior protein source health buffs can depend on ; P

Soy protein is great. I am a vegetarian so most of my protein comes from soy products, textured vegetable protein, rice, and beans. I eat soy daily and have for over 10 years.

Not sure what to do with the powder? Is it supposed to be added to milk or somthing?

One thing about the "protein" diets is that you also must cut out the carbs and simple sugars for it to work. Don't add lots of extra calories... calorie intake should be about the same.

Soy protein doesn't seem to be as good as previously reported. Whey definitely does have more benefits than soy. Soy might increase estrogen levels but that is still not certain. It's still a decent protein source but try to get most of your protein from regular food.

Actually soy protein is the best for woman too. It helps with a lot of "women's problems"
If you want to gain weight, start carefully, just with 2 scoops in milk, don't use water, it tastes not as good. You can blend it with berries, or banana and if you add a yogurt you're really healthy.
Just try it for a while and see how much you actually are gaining, and then you might want to increase and have a shake in the afternoon too.
The soya in the protein is the easiest to digest, is cancer preventing, and also for the future if you keep it up it will help you with menopause, even if its a long time from now and start adding a banana and blend it for the potassium.
Add this to your regular meals and you will gain weight.

Health benefits of Soy Protein Powder

The health benefits of soy protein powders are coming from the soy protein and the associated isoflavones. A daily diet low in cholesterol and saturated fat and containing 25 grams of soy protein may reduce the risk of heart disease. The soy protein has a high biological value and contains all essential amino acids . Soy isoflavones have been recognized for many health benefits, including lowering the risk of heart disease, breast cancer, prostate cancer and osteoporosis. Soy isoflavones act as anti-cancer agents because they are antioxidant, inhibit the growth of blood vessels required to feed tumours and inhibit the protein production in cancer cells. Soy isoflavones are also beneficial for menopausal women because they may ease menopausal symptoms and help to maintain strong bones.

atlantisflicka is right about the isolate. They have had problems with that one. However, soy itself is a good protein. Protein alone is not good for weight gain. You need balance, Include some healthy carbs and a few healthy fats (not many on the fats). Too much protein can be hard on the kidneys.
