In order to literally know if you are going through a mid-life crises, you would have to know what is mid-life for you and the only way to know that is to die right now, and in that case you have just gone through and end of life crises.

1. You are well past your adolesent years, possibly with a spouce/ children and well established in a job.

2. You become aware that the "big dreams" of your idealistic youth have not materialized.

3. You are not coping with this well.

4. In an attempt to make up for "lost time" you try to "restart" where you "left off" when you were "young".

5. Instead of this renewed passion being a pleasant experience, it creates dysfunctional behavior that disrupts your life, creating a period of crisis.

You can only know when it's going to happen. I do know I've been experiencing such a mid-life transition period.

I expect many jewels to come from such a "metamorphosis".

a mid-life crisis is a self-fullfilling prophecy, so if you find that everything you dread is happening, it's probably your prophecy being fulfilled by your own self -
